Northern Michigan University Annual Student Athlete Recognition Banquet

MARQUETTE, Mich. --- Freshman weightlifter Mason Groehler was named the most valuable performer at today’s (March 17) Student-Athlete Recognition Banquet.

roehler, of Denmark Wis., earned MVP honors after qualifying for the Junior Pan American Championships and being the highest-ranking athlete on the NMU-OTS weightlifting squad at fourth in the nation in the junior-age class.

The other award recipients of Coach Vance Newgard’s team were sophomore Cecily Ripley of River Falls, Wis., with a 4.0 overall GPA, scholar-athlete award; freshman Taylor Turner of Saint Augustine, Fla., newcomer award; and freshman Tom Piscopo of Pace, Fla., most improved. Turner added 35 kg on her total and placed second overall at the Junior National Championships. Piscopo also placed second at the Junior Nationals and qualified as an alternate for the Junior Pan American Championships.
