Twelve Athletes Set American Records, Team Savannah, Chaos Weightlifting and Team Minnesota Excel at 2015 National Youth Championships

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.—(July  2) Twelve standout athletes set American records last weekend at the 2015 USA Weightlifting National Youth Championships in Minneapolis. Team Savannah (men) and Chaos Weightlifting (women) also won overall squad championships, with the Middleton Award for the best combined men’s and women’s team going to hometown Team Minnesota.

The prestigious annual event, which featured more than 600 of the nation’s top weightlifters age 17 and younger, took place June 25-28 near the iconic Mall of America at the Doubletree by Hilton Minneapolis South. The Bloomington CVB (Minneapolis-St. Paul) and Minnesota High School Weightlifting Organization served as host partners for the competition, which was the largest event ever for the sport in the United States, second on a worldwide scale only to Mexico’s 2015 youth nationals.

Among the male athletes who broke records, Hutch Friend (Club Boris) established new youth American records in the men’s 13U 31kg category, winning an overall gold medal with top national marks in the snatch (36kg), clean & jerk (47kg) and total lift (83kg) and receiving a USA Weightlifting Best Lifter Award in his division. Seth Tom (Hasslefree Barbell) won the overall gold medal in the men’s 13U 39kg category, setting a youth American record in the clean & jerk (63kg). Dean Goad (Coffee’s Gym) earned the overall gold medal in the men’s 13U 44kg category, establishing a youth American record. Logan Griffith (unattached, Virginia) won the overall gold medal in the men’s 14-15 44kg category, setting an American record in the clean & jerk (73kg). Estevan Soto (Moorestown WLC) won the overall gold medal in the men’s 16-17 50kg category, establishing American records in the snatch (75kg), clean & jerk (88kg) and total lift (163kg). Harrison Maurus (unattached, Washington) won the overall gold medal in the men’s 14-15 85kg category, setting new American records in the snatch (120kg), clean & jerk (155kg) and total lift (275kg). C.J. Cummings (Team Savannah) won the overall gold medal in the men’s 14-15 69kg category, setting new youth and junior American records in the snatch (129kg) and total lift (295kg), earning the USA Weightlifting Best Lifter Award in his division.

Among the female competitors who broke records, Abigail Flickner (Club Boris) established new youth American records in the women’s 13U 31kg category, winning an overall gold medal with top national marks in the snatch (30kg), clean & jerk (42kg) and total lift (72kg) and earning a USA Weightlifting Best Lifter Award. Olivia Chardon (Epidemic Weightlifting) won the overall gold medal in the women’s 13U 39kg category, setting youth American records in the clean & jerk (50kg) and total lift (87kg). Megan Seegert (unattached, California) won the overall gold medal in the women’s 16-17 48kg category, setting new American records in the snatch (66kg), clean & jerk (84kg) and total lift (150kg) and winning a USA Weightlifting Best Lifter Award in her division. Jourdan Delacruz (Podium Up Weightlifting) won the overall gold medal in the women’s 16-17 53kg category, establishing new American records in the snatch (69kg), clean & jerk (92kg) and total lift (161kg). Athena Schrijver (Myles Ahead Weightlifting) won the overall gold medal in the women’s 14-15 58kg category, setting American records in the snatch (65kg), clean & jerk (85kg) and total lift (150kg), earning the USA Weightlifting Best Lifter Award in her division.

Other squads won championships in separate age divisions: 13U category, StoneAge Fuel Barbell (women), Team Savannah (men); 14-15, Myles Ahead Weightlifting (women), Team Savannah (men); 16-17, Team Minnesota (women), Team Savannah (men).

USA Weightlifting Best Lifter Awards were distributed to one male and one female competitor in each category. The winners were as follows: 16-17, Seegert (women), Omar Cummings (men, 77kg, Team Savannah); 14-15, Schrijver (women), C.J. Cummings (men); 13U, Flickner (women), Dade Stanley (men, 62kg, Team Savannah); and 11U, Flickner (women), Friend (men).
