American Open Series FAQ:

When does registration open for the Nike American Open Series 3, powered by Rogue Fitness?

Registration opens at 5pm (US Mountain Time) on July 9, 2018. Participants are kindly requested to register as early as possible so that we can properly prepare for the size of the competition in September. Registration will close at 2pm (US Mountain Time) on August 16, 2019.

You can register at: http://bit.ly/18AO3

Do I need to re-qualify for the American Open Series 3 and/or American Open Finals?

No, your existing qualifying total made during the qualification period, provided it meets the qualifying totals linked below, will be recognized. You may go up or down one category to register provided that your qualifying total does meet the minimum standard for that category.

Qualifying totals were assigned to the bodyweight categories that the IWF published on 7/6/2018 based on the existing bodyweight category qualifying totals already published.

If I compete in a Local Meet that is using the old weight classes, can I use the total from that meet to qualify for the American Open Series 3 and/or American Open Finals

Yes, the total made at that meet, provided it meets the qualifying totals linked below, will be recognized. You may go up or down one category to register, provided that your qualifying total does meet the minimum standard for that category.

I am hosting a local meet; do I have to use the new weight classes?

Local meets sanctioned on or after July 9 will use the new bodyweight categories. Local meets sanctioned prior to July 8, 2018 have the option to use either body weight category set, but we recommend using the new categories as soon as possible.

I am hosting a local meet that was sanctioned prior to the announcement of the new weight classes and will be using the old weight classes at our local AO3 qualifying event. Can athletes use the totals they hit during the meet to qualify for the American Open Series 3 and/or American Open Finals?

Yes, the total made at that meet, provided it meets the qualifying totals linked below, will be recognized. The athlete may go up or down one category to register provided that your qualifying total does meet the minimum standard for that category.

I am hosting a Local Meet and would like to utilize USAW’s Membership and Event System (Webpoint) for meet registrations, how can I do that?

The system has the capability of acting like similar products such as Eventbrite to take registrations immediately through the membership system. This also produces a start list for the meet director, distributes money to them once per week and means all memberships are checked up-front. Any questions regarding using the local meet registrations can be directed to Brad Suchorski at brad.suchorski@usaweightlifting.org.

How many days of competition will there be at the American Open Series 3?

Competition will commence on Thursday 13 September, rather than the traditional day of Friday in order to cope with the expected high demand for this competition.

Where can I find information about the Nike American Open Finals, powered by Rogue Fitness?

Registration for The Nike American Open Finals, powered by Rogue Fitness, also opens at 5pm MST on 7/9/2018. The qualifying totals work in the same way as stated for the American Open Series 3, and you can find the updated totals here.

How will new American Record standards be set?

USA Weightlifting has appointed a task force of data analytics experts to determine a record standard. We anticipate publishing these standards, at least for Senior and Junior levels, by the end of July with the remainder to follow as soon as possible.

How will USAW determine the best lifter at National Events?

We will now longer determine best lifter by Sinclair. Instead, we will determine the best lifter for men and women by Robi Points. Robi point calculation can be found here http://www.iwf.net/robi-points/

Local meets may use Sinclair to determine best lifters, however, we recommend using Robi Points. Robi point calculations will be available for the new weight classes in the upcoming weeks.

How will Youth categories, typically contested at the National Youth Championship, be affected?

USA Weightlifting has appointed a task force of data analytics experts together with representatives from the Coaching, Youth and Competition Committees to determine the lower bodyweight categories used at the 14-15 and 13 & Under/11 & Under age categories. The 16-17 level, as well as the American Open Series, will use the IWF Youth Bodyweight Categories.

Funding and Selection for USA Weightlifting’s National Teams:

Our new selection and funding system comes into force on August 1. For the avoidance of doubt if you qualified for a period 2 stipend, it will be honored through September (the published end of that stipend system). You can find our new Selection and Funding processes here.

When will international events begin to use the new bodyweight categories?

New Body Weight categories will begin to be used internationally on 1 November 2018, the first day of competition of the 2018 IWF World Championships. For the avoidance of doubt this means the 2018 IWF Masters World Championship, the 2018 Pan American Junior Championship and the 2018 FISU/IWF World University Championship will use the previous body weight categories.
