USA Weightlifting (USAW), the National Governing Body for the sport of Olympic style weightlifting, has a unique opening for the position of Head Coach at the US Olympic Training Site, Northern Michigan University (NMU) in Marquette, MI.

Position Description

Position Summary
The Head Coach will be directly responsible for the Weightlifting program at the NMU Training Center. This position offers the exceptional opportunity to identify, select, and develop athletes in the sport of Weightlifting, while adhering to the mission, goals and objectives of USA Weightlifting. Directing the NMU Training Center program allows for this coach to guide athletes through all facets of preparation as well as discovering new methods of athlete development, training, and recruitment.

Primary Responsibilities
The Head Coach will serve as the primary coach for the Full Program participants living at the NMU Olympic Training Center in Marquette, as well as any developmental athletes and qualified athletes living off campus. He/she will develop and monitor individualized and periodized training plans for the athletes, provide short and long-term planning for athlete training and development for athletes at varying levels in close cooperation with USA Weightlifting’s Sport department.

• Utilize the tools and resources provided by the NMU and USA Weightlifting

• Complete annual Continuing Education to stay abreast of the latest Sports Science and Coaching methodology through seminars and other avenues.

• Support the CEO and USA Weightlifting Sports Performance group in the preparation of the High Performance Plan as it directly relates to the NMU Program.

• Regular communication with the Sport department of USA Weightlifting, and internally within NMU.

• Duties may include hosting coaching clinics, and other events to further promote the sport of weightlifting at NMU.

• Active recruitment of athletes and students to Northern Michigan University, both with and without scholarship funding, supporting the enrollment goals fully of Northern Michigan University.

• Travel expectations include National competitions, clinics, recruiting engagements and other educational opportunities.

• Perform other related duties as assigned by the CEO or USA Weightlifting Sport Performance Team.

Qualifications and Selection Criteria

The optimal candidate will provide a combination of education and experience, fulfilling the following minimum requirements:

• Experience - Experience and credentials in the sport of Olympic Weightlifting will include, but not be limited to, the following:

o Athlete production to National and International levels

  o National and International coaching experience

o Program Development and Individualization

• Education - A Bachelors degree is preferred in a scientific field of study of human anatomy, physiology, sports science or other relative field of science or exercise science studies, or equivalent experience. If not already held, the USA Weightlifting Level 1 and Level 2 must be held by the end of 12 weeks of employment.

• Communication - Must be fluent in English language, both written and conversational and possess the ability to effectively communicate with athletes, staff and others.

• Doping Free Training - Must demonstrate an understanding of and commitment to doping free training, doping free recovery techniques, per US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) and World Ant-Doping Agency (WADA) standards. The coach is also required to complete USADA Coach’s Edge e-training before the commencement of employment.

• SafeSport Training – Must demonstrate an understanding of and commitment to the practice of SafeSport. Additionally, the coach is required to pass a background check for both USA Weightlifting and Northern Michigan University and complete US Center for SafeSport e-training before the commencement of employment.
