Cara Heads Slaughter is one of the most sought-after weightlifting coaches in the DC metro region providing guidance and instruction to over 100 athletes and coaches each week. Certified as a USAW International Coach, Cara has served as a competition coach at every level- local, national and international, including as a coach at the 2016 USA Olympic Team Trials. Athletes under Cara's guidance have earned numerous medals at national and international competitions. Additionally, Cara is a USAW Coach Course Instructor has been appointed by USA Weightlifting to assist at numerous USAW training camps at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO and as Team Leader and Team Coach of international teams.

 

Cara enjoyed a successful 18-year career as an elite weightlifter, earning 2 junior and 8 senior national championship titles, setting numerous junior and senior American records, and representing the United States at 6 world championships and as a member of the 2000 USA Olympic Team in Sydney.

 

Throughout her career, Cara was provided the unique opportunity to train at top USA Weightlifting regional weightlifting training centers, including as a resident athlete at the Olympic Training Center, and to learn from some of the most respected weightlifting coaches in the United States- Tony Ciarelli, Michael Cohen, Bob Morris, and Dr. Kyle Pierce.

 

Prior to competing in the sport of Weightlifting full time, Cara was a Division I collegiate athlete, earning an athletic scholarship at the University of California, Berkeley. As a freshman, Cara competed in the discus and hammer throw, placing third in the hammer at the (Pac-10) track & field conference championships.

Founded by US Olympian and USAW International Coach Cara Heads Slaughter, with operations based in Arlington, VA, CH Fitness & Performance offers an extensive menu of coaching services and educational programs to meet each client's specific goals- for the person interested in learning Olympic-style weightlifting, for elite athletes and experienced coaches, and for everyone in between!

Our weightlifting training area offers numerous platforms; Eleiko, Rogue and Pendlay weightlifting bars; Rogue competition and Pendlay elite bumpers; squat stands, multiple pulling block stations, and 2 dedicated jerk block stations.

Our greatest asset and resource is our team of dedicated coaches. We are committed to and exemplify a core belief that teaching proper technique combined with a thoughtful approach to planning weightlifting training is essential to optimum performance on the platform.

 

Outreach Programs: 

 

Program Name:Weightlifting Educational Series

CH Fitness and Performance (CHFP) Educational Series offers athletes and coaches education and practical, hands-on instruction on the snatch and clean and jerk with Olympian Cara Heads Slaughter. The educational series provides continuing education through a progressive curriculum of programs.

  • Six Week Technique Classes (Ongoing): Emphasizing proper technique as the critical foundation for learning the Olympic lifts, this class is ideal for athletes new to using the snatch and the clean and jerk. It is also great for experienced lifters and coaches to identify and correct bad habits, and become significantly more efficient in the lifts to improve speed & power.
  • Weightlifting Technique Clinic: The Technique Clinic is a one-day intensive workshop that provides five (5) hours of technique instruction, hands-on lifting with coaching feedback and video analysis of each participant’s weightlifting technique during the clinic. 
  • Two-Day Olympic Weightlifting Mini Camp: The two-day Olympic Weightlifting Mini Camp is an annual event that features intermediate and advanced training for the snatch and the clean & jerk with elite weightlifters and international coaches throughout a weekend.
  • Coaches Seminar: During the five (5) hour interactive Weightlifting Coaches’ Seminar, attendees will become skilled at identifying and correcting bad habits and learn helpful progressions and coaching cues to assist their athletes in becoming more efficient in the lifts, and to improve speed and power. Attendees spend considerable time doing the movements to receive and offer peer-to-peer feedback as well as during the video analysis portion of the seminar.
  • USAW Sports Performance Coach Course: This is USA Weightlifting’s entry level course and is open to anyone 17 years of age or older. The scope and sequence of this course includes the teaching progressions of the Snatch, Clean & Jerk, and all associated movements. Register through USA Weightlifting.
  • Twelve-Week Coaches Academy: The Coaches Academy offers advanced and continuing education on coaching the Olympic lifts beyond a weightlifting certification. The Coaches Academy is a 12-week program for new and experienced coaches to become highly skilled and confident in coaching athletes performing the snatch, the clean, and the jerk. Prerequisite: CSCS or weightlifting certification from USA Weightlifting, CrossFit

Program Name:First Fridays

First Fridays Open House workouts are offered FREE the first Friday of each month to allow weightlifters throughout the DC region and beyond to experience our training facility or simply to have a change of training environment. A CHFP coach is on hand to answer questions or offer feedback if desired. No drop-in fee is required and registration is not needed. Participants just need to fill out a waiver.

 

Program Name:Youth Development 

CHFP provides group coaching for youth-age athletes on Monday and Wednesday afternoons and competition team workouts on Saturday afternoon.  Each Spring, CHFP also hosts a FREE USAW sanctioned Youth Development Meet to offer youth-age athletes in our LWC competition experience and to provide an opportunity for athletes to qualify for Youth Nationals.
