The American Barefoot Club has announced that Jerry Kanawyer (Byron, Calif.) and Megan Adams (Center City, Minn.) have been selected as the organization’s 2020 Male Athlete of the Year and 2020 Female Athlete of the Year, respectively.
Kanawyer, 58, is in his fourth decade of tournament skiing. He has competed in the Open division and world championships’ events since the 1990s. Kanawyer also contributes significantly to the sport beyond his skiing. He has been an integral part of the USA Water Ski & Wake Sports Foundation’s Ski with the Legends West event, expanding the inclusion of barefooting in the event. He also hosts and directs competitions each year, in addition to his roles in scoring and judging. This past summer he hosted a “Get on the Water” clinic in which he taught three young athletes to barefoot, and he trained five other kids in barefooting outside of a clinic setting.
Adams, 17, went from not competing at the Worlds in 2016 to being the only girl chosen for the 2020 U.S. Junior Barefoot Water Ski Team. And her scores improved to new levels, helping her break into the Open Women division. Adams recorded multiple personal-best scores in all events, including slalom (10.6), tricks (2,350 points) and jumping (34 feet). She is currenting ranked No. 1 in the world for Under 17 girls. She also is an ABC scorer and handles all scorer duties for the ABC’s Midwest Region.
