Coaching Education

Our Goal is Your Success

USA Volleyball Education takes a wide path in its efforts to educate coaches, players, officials and fans.

The USA Volleyball Coaching Accreditation Program (CAP) targets coaches who are looking for an opportunity for professional preparation and advancement. We offer both indoor and beach clinics. Nearly 40,000 volleyball coaches have benefited from our clinics across the United States.

Update on USA Volleyball Coaching Education

As a result of the recent layoffs, Coaching Education is in a period of transition as we look to create significant changes to what and how we provide educational content and professional accreditation to volleyball coaches across the entire spectrum of the game.

IMPACT

We believe IMPACT requirements should stay in place and recommend that IMPACT onDemand is used as the primary source for this program. Regional On-site courses and IMPACT Equivalency courses may be continued as they have been in the past.

2020 CAP Clinics

In an effort to deliver on our commitments with our Regional partners and their coaches, it is our intention to move forward with as many 2020 CAP Clinics that are currently scheduled. This has been agreed with broad support from the current CAP Cadre.

Unfortunately, current situations and associated registration numbers have necessitated cancellation of all CAP Clinics scheduled for Aug 8-9 (St. James VBC, Springfield, VA) and Aug 15-16 (IREVA, Schenectady, NY). All registrants are being informed and will be issued a full refund as a result of the cancellation.

For future events, we will work with scheduled hosts to evaluate local and state health conditions related to COVID-19 and strongly recommend that all criteria identified in the White House’s Opening Up Again guidelines have been satisfied. These include:

  • Downward trajectory of documented COVID-19 cases reported within a 14-day period, or
  • Downward trajectory of positive tests as a percent of total tests within a 14-day period (accompanied by flat or increasing volume of tests).

To avoid any confusion and for the safety of all involved, we will abide by all federal, state, and local guidance and will ask for an agreement from local hosts with a commitment to implement the CDC considerations for events and gatherings.

Expired or Expiring CAP Certification

We are prepared to implement a moratorium on CAP certification expirations. This means that any CAP-accredited coach who has received notice of an expired or expiring credential in 2020 will be maintained at their current level until notified. We will not require re-certification at this time.

Outstanding CAP Materials or Incomplete Progress Toward Certification

For individuals who have already attended a CAP Clinic and are still working toward completion of required course assignments, we will also issue a moratorium on this process. The timeline for course completion has been suspended until notified. If CAP certification is critical for employment or other time-sensitive reasons, we will work with candidates on a case by case basis to accept and review assignments. Individual coaches can email us at cap@usav.org to discuss their situation with us directly.

Additional information and FAQs can still be found online.

CAP Going Forward

We have been critically reviewing our approach to coach education including our curriculum, our content, and our distribution methods. We have also embarked on a review of coaching education programs offered by the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee, US National Governing Bodies, and leading International Federations across Olympic/Paralympic and professional sport. While the details of our next steps will be dependent on organizational capacity, our intention is to engage and support more coaches than ever with more, different, and better resources in the near future.

What are Coaches Saying about CAP?

CAP is all encompassing. Practice plan design and teaching different skills related to the sport is only half of the story. CAP II brought it full circle for value and did a deep dive into athlete psyche, evolving your philosophy and realizing that there is no one-size-fits-all to being successful. Perspective is such a vital part to my growth as a coach as it is encouraging to know that what I am doing is correct but there are always ways to be better.
- CAP I, II attendee, GEVA 2019

CAP training by the USAV cadre is outstanding. It’s current and relevant to coaching today’s young athletes. This certification is important for my coaching career. The training is important for my life. I’m not coaching club this year, but I wasn’t going to miss this learning opportunity.
