U.S. Men Split Recent Matches at WUG

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (July 9, 2015) – The U.S. men’s volleyball team competing at the World University Games went 1-1 in its most recent matches against Argentina (4-1) and Korea (2-3) in Gwangju, Korea.

The World University Games is at 21-sport event with more than 20,000 participants from 170 countries. The U.S. men’s volleyball team is 2-2 as it heads into placement matches. It will play China on Friday.

The U.S. roster won a five set thriller against Korea on July 7, 21-25, 35-33, 25-18, 13-25, 15-11, at Yeomju Gymnasium. The U.S. men had 59 kills, 13 blocks, and one ace. The team capitalized on Korea’s 36 errors, while committing only 17.

Greg Petty and Kyle Russell each had an outstanding match, combining for 48 of the team’s 59 kills.  Petty recorded 28 kills and two blocks for a total of 30 points, while Russell had 20 kills and three blocks for 23 points. Kevin Rakestraw notched five kills and three blocks. 

The U.S. men dropped the match against Argentina, 25-22, 25-20, 25-15 at Naju Dongsin University Gymnasium. The team registered 31 kills, one block, and two aces. 

Russell led the charge for the U.S., with 10 kills and one ace. Petty followed closely behind with nine kills. Jason Agopian garnered four kills, one block, and one ace.
