COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Feb. 19, 2014) – Middle blocker David Lee is playing this winter for Tang Dynasty Hotel Shanghai in China and is making the most of his time in the country where he won a gold medal at the 2008 Olympic Games.
Lee’s (Alpine, Calif.) team is 12-0 and most recently defeated Liaoning, 25-20, 22-25, 25-16, 25-21, on Feb. 13, although Lee did not play in the match. Lee scored 10 points on Feb. 9 when Shanghai beat Jiangsu, 25-16, 25-19, 25-15.

Outside hitter Matt Anderson (West Seneca, N.Y.) and his Russian team Zenit Kazan have moved on to the semifinals of the CEV Champions League after defeating Italy’s Copra Elior Piacenza in two straight matches.
On Feb. 6, visiting Kazan defeated Piacenza, 25-23, 25-22, 25-22. Anderson scored 13 points on nine attacks and a match-high four aces. To view a photo gallery, click here. On Feb. 12, host Kazan beat Piacenza, 25-21, 25-20, 25-22. Anderson finished with 12 points on nine attacks, two blocks and one ace. To view a photo gallery, click here. In the semifinals, Kazan will face Russia’s Belogorie Belgorod on March 22 in Ankara, Turkey. The championship and third-place matches will be played March 23.
Outside hitter Paul Lotman (Lakewood, Colo.) and his Polish team Asseco Resovia lost twice to Poland’s Jastrzebski Weigel to be eliminated from the tournament. Setter Donald Suxho (Korce, Albania) and his Italian team Diatec Trentino fell twice to Belgorod to be eliminated.
Middle blocker Russell Holmes (Fountain Valley, Calif.) and Turkey’s Istanbul BBSK have advanced to the semifinals of the Challenge Cup after defeating Belgium’s Euphony Asse-Lennik, which includes U.S. middle blocker Jacek Ratajczak (Warsaw, Poland), 25-20, 25-23, 25-18 on Feb. 13 in Istanbul. Holmes scored six points on five kills and one block. Ratajczak did not play in the match. Istanbul will play Italy’s Andreoli Latina in the semifinals. To view a photo gallery, click here.
Paul Lotman and Asseco Resovia went 2-0 over the past week. On Feb. 8, Resovia defeated AZS Częstochowa, 27-25, 25-16, 25-23. 8. Lotman started the second and third sets and scored 11 points on nine kills, one block and one ace. He was also credited with 19 receptions, 53 percent positive. On Feb. 15, Resovia beat Indykpol AZS Olsztyn, 21-25, 26-24, 22-25, 25-20, 15-8. Lotman scored 13 points on 12 kills and one block.
Opposite Carson Clark (Santa Barbara, Calif.), outside hitter Garrett Muagututia (Oceanside, Calif.) and their Polish team Transfer Bydgoszcz went 1-1 over the past week. On Feb. 7, Bydgoszcz fell to AZS Politechnika Warszawska, 22-25, 25-22, 22-25, 25-19, 16-14. Clark started the first three sets and scored 11 points on seven kills and a match-high four aces. Muagututia scored nine points on seven attacks and two blocks. On Feb. 14, Bydgoszcz defeated Effector Kielce, 25-15, 18-25, 25-15, 25-23. Clark scored 15 points on 14 attacks and one ace. Muagututia added 14 points on 13 kills and one ace.
Matt Anderson and Zenit Kazan went 2-1 over the past week in the Russian Super League. On Feb. 8, Kazan defeated VK Grozny, 25-20, 25-21, 25-27, 25-19. Middle blocker Max Holt (Cincinnati) and Dinamo Moscow went 2-1 over the past week. On Feb. 8, Moscow fell to Lokomotiv Novosibirsk, 19-25, 25-23, 25-20, 23-25, 15-12 on Feb. 8. Holt scored 12 points on 10 attacks and two blocks. On Feb. 15, Moscow came back to defeat Kuzbass Kemerovo, 20-25, 25-19, 25-21, 25-18. Holt scored 12 points on six attacks, three blocks and a match-high three aces. On Feb. 18, Moscow defeated VK Grozny, 25-16, 25-21, 25-22. Holt scored six points on three kills, two blocks and one ace.
On Feb. 8, middle blocker David Smith (Saugus, Calif.), outside hitter Jayson Jablonsky (Yorba Linda, Calif.) and Tours went 2-0 over the past week. First, on Feb. 8 they defeated Ajaccio, 25-20, 24-26, 7-25, 25-20, 18-16. Smith scored 10 points on nine attacks and one block. Jablonsky started the first two sets and finished with five points on five kills. He was credited with 23 receptions, 91 percent positive.
On Feb. 15, Tours defeated U.S. opposite Murphy Troy (St. Louis, Mo.) and St-Nazaire, 23-25, 25-20, 25-12, 25-19. Smith scored 17 points on 11 kills and a match-high six blocks. Jablonsky did not play in the match. Troy scored 15 points on 10 kills, two blocks and a match-high three aces.
Troy was the match’s high scorer on Feb. 8 when his team lost to Paris, 26-28, 26-28, 25-16, 25-18, 15-13. He finished with 26 points on a match-high 25 kills and one ace.
Middle blocker Futi Tavana (Kalaheo, Hawaii) and Toulouse defeated Lyon, 25-21, 25-16, 25-19 on Feb. 7. Tavana scored 13 points on seven attacks and a match-high five blocks. On Feb. 14, Tavana scored 14 points on 10 kills and a match-high four blocks in his team’s 25-21, 21-25, 25-22, 25-19 victory over Beauvais.
Setter Kawika Shoji (Honolulu, Hawaii), outside hitter Scott Touzinsky (St. Louis, Mo.) and the Berlin Recycling Volleys went 2-0 over the past week. On Feb. 8, Berlin beat CV Mitteldeutschland, 25-17, 21-25, 25-20, 25-12. Shoji scored four points on one kill, two blocks and one ace and set the team to a 57.4 kill percent. Touzinsky started the fourth set and scored three points on one kill, one block and one ace. On Feb. 15, Berlin defeated Moerser SC, 25-14, 25-20, 25-20. Touzinsky scored 11 points on seven attacks, two blocks and two aces. He was also credited with 17 receptions, 53 percent positive. Shoji did not play in the match. On Feb. 15, outside hitter Jeff Menzel (Santa Barbara, Calif.) led his Belgium league team Noliko Maaseik to a 25-15, 25-15, 26-24 win over Axis Shanks Guibertin. Menzel led all scorers with 19 points on 19 kills.
Libero Erik Shoji (Honolulu, Hawaii), middle blocker Andy Hein (Carol Stream, Ill.) and their Austrian team Hypo Tirol ended the regular season with a victory over TSV Volksbank Harberg, 25-15, 25-13, 25-18 on Feb. 15 and finished league play in first place. Shoji was credited with eight receptions, 38 percent positive. Hein scored 10 points on seven kills and three blocks.
