U.S. Men to Face Puerto Rico in NORCECA Semis

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Sept. 1, 2011) – The U.S. Men’s National Volleyball Team will play Puerto Rico at 5 p.m. PT on Friday in the semifinals of the NORCECA Men’s Continental Championship in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico.

Canada (3-0) will play Cuba (3-1) in Friday’s other semifinal at 3 p.m. PT.

The U.S. Men (3-0) had Thursday off while the quarterfinals were contested.

Puerto Rico (3-1) defeated Trinidad & Tobago (1-3) in Thursday’s second quarterfinal, 25-17, 25-15, 25-19. In the first quarterfinal match, Cuba (3-1) beat Mexico (1-3), 25-10, 25-23, 24-14.

The top two teams at the NORCECA Championship qualify for the 2011 FIVB World Cup, which is the first qualifier for the 2012 Olympic Games. If the U.S. Men beat Puerto Rico, they will be guaranteed a spot in the World Cup.

The United States played Puerto Rico four times this summer in World League and won all four matches.

The semifinal winners will play in the gold medal match at 5 p.m. PT on Saturday. The losers will play for the bronze medal at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
Following the completion of pool play on Wednesday, the United States had several players among the best in the competition.

Middle blocker David Lee (Alpine, Calif.) led all blockers with eight for an average of 1.14 per set. Opposite Evan Patak (Pleasanton, Calif.) led all servers with nine aces for an average of 0.90 per set.

Libero Rich Lambourne (Tustin, Calif.) was second among all diggers with 22 for an average of 2.20 per set. U.S. setter Kevin Hansen (Newport Beach, Calif.) was second among all setters with 45 assists for an average of 4.50 per set.

Outside hitter Matt Anderson (West Seneca, N.Y.) has been the United States’ leading scorer and was fifth overall with 34 points on 28 kills, one block and five aces. He was also third among all receivers.

As a team, the United States led in kills (128 attacks and 22 faults on 231 attempts/55.4 kill percent), and aces (average of 2.40 per set).
