U.S. Men's Update: It's Greek to Me

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Jan. 27, 2011) – In a Greek league match between two teams with U.S. players, outside hitter Jayson Jablonsky (Yorba Linda, Calif.) and Olympiacos defeated setter Jonathan Winder and PAOK, 25-19, 25-21, 25-20 on Jan. 23.

Jablonsky started all three sets and scored seven points on six kills (0.38 hitting percentage) and one block. He was also credited with 19 receptions, 68 percent positive and 26 percent excellent.

Winder started all three sets, but did not score for PAOK. He set the team to a 0.35 hitting percentage.

The victory moved Olympiacos into fourth place in the league while PAOK is in fifth.

In another Greek league match between teams with U.S. players, league-leading Iraklis, including U.S. opposite Brook Billings (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and outside hitter Ryan Owens (Evanston, Ill.) defeated U.S. opposite Will Price (Gaithersburg, Md.) and GS Lamia, 3-1 (23-25, 25-13, 25-17, 25-20).

Billings led all scorers with 15 points on 11 kills (0.32 hitting percentage), two blocks and two aces. Owens, who substituted in the first set and started the next three, added 14 points on eight kills (0.26 hitting percentage), four blocks and two aces. Price led Lamia with 14 points on 14 kills (0.20 hitting percentage).

U.S. middle blocker Russell Holmes (Fountain Valley, Calif.) and his Brazilian league team Vivo/Minas defeated Medley/Campinas, 3-2 (21-25, 26-24, 16-25, 25-20, 15-12). Holmes substituted in the first set and started the next four. He finished with eight points on five kills and three blocks.


The Russian Volleyball Federation held its fifth annual All-Star Game on Jan. 22 in Kemerovo, Russia. The East Team, including U.S. outside hitter Reid Priddy (Richmond, Va.), defeated the West Team, including setter Kevin Hansen (Newport Beach, Calif.) and opposite Clay Stanley (Honolulu, Hawaii), 3-1 (25-20, 24-26, 25-16, 25-22).

Priddy played setter for the West Team in the fourth set.

U.S. middle blocker Ryan Millar (Alpine, Utah) and Asseco Resovia Rzeszów fell to PGE Skra Be┼échatów, 3:1 (25-15, 25-22, 30-32, 25-16) in a Cup of Poland match on Jan. 22.

Evan Patak (Pleasanton, Calif.) led all scorers with 15 points on 15 kills as he helped his Korean league team Korean Air defeat KEPCO45, 25-20, 25-19, 28-26 on Jan. 24.


U.S. outside hitter Scott Touzinsky (St. Louis, Mo.) and his German league team SCC Berlin defeated EnBW TV Rottenburg, 25-16, 25-21, 28-26 on Jan. 22. Touzinsky started the first two sets and scored five points on four kills and one ace. He was also credited with 20 receptions, 75 percent positive and 25 percent excellent. SCC Berlin followed that with a 25-21, 25-20, 25-20 victory over RWE Volleys Bottrop on Jan. 26. Touzinsky started all three sets and scored five points on five kills. He was also credited with 17 receptions, 65 percent positive and 24 percent excellent.


U.S. setter Brian Thornton (San Clemente, Calif.) and his French B league team Chaumont defeated Nancy, 25-19, 25-21, 25-23 on Jan. 22.

Thornton started all three sets and did not score, but set Chaumont to a 0.54 kill percentage.
