U.S. Men Return to Winner's Circle at WUGs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Aug. 20, 2011) – The U.S. Men’s Team found its way back to the winner’s circle with a 25-21, 24-26, 25-10, 27-25 victory over Sweden on Saturday at the World University Games in Shenzhen, China.

The U.S. Team improved to 4-3 and will play for 13th place on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Shenzhen (10 p.m. Saturday PT) against Norway.

After losing two straight five-set matches to Thailand and Japan with a high number of team errors, the United States held its team errors to 18 on Saturday while scoring 39 points off of Sweden’s miscues.

The U.S. Men led in blocks (9-7), but trailed in attacks (52-50) and service aces (5-3). The U.S. Men converted 45 percent of their attack attempts into points and had a hitting efficiency of 0.342. Sweden converted 40.3 of its kill attempts and had a hitting efficiency of 0.194.

Opposite Carson Clark (Santa Barbara, Calif./UC Irvine) led all scorers with 18 points on a match-high 16 kills and two aces. Outside hitter Tri Bourne (Honolulu, Hawaii/USC) added 17 points on 11 attacks, a match-high five blocks and one ace. Middle blocker Tom Amberg (Westwood, Calif./UCLA) totaled 13 points on 10 kills (0.615 hitting efficiency) and three blocks.

Martin Larsson led Sweden with 15 points on 13 attacks, one block and one ace.

Among other U.S. scorers, middle blocker Ryan Meehan (Dana Point, Calif./Long Beach State) scored five points on four attacks and one block. Outside hitter Brad Lawson (Honolulu, Hawaii/Stanford) and outside hitter Cory Yoder (San Clemente, Calif./UC Irvine) each added four points on four kills.

Outside hitter Jeff Menzel (Santa Barbara, Calif./UCSB) scored one point on one kill.

Libero Erik Shoji (Honolulu, Hawaii/Stanford) led the team in digs with seven and also had seven receptions. Bourne had 10 receptions and four digs and Yoder had seven receptions and four digs.

U.S. Men’s Head Coach Gordon Mayforth (St. Petersburg, Fla.) started Lawson and Bourne at outside hitter, Amberg and Meehan at middle blocker, Riley McKibbin (Honolulu, Hawaii/USC) at setter, Clark at opposite and Erik Shoji at libero.

Yoder started the third and fourth sets for Lawson. Menzel, setter Kawika Shoji (Honolulu, Hawaii/Stanford) and opposite Murphy Troy (St. Louis, Mo./USC) all played as substitutes.
