U.S. Men's National Team Open Tryout

About the tryout...

Dates: Dec. 17-18, 2018
Location: American Sports Center, Anaheim, Calif.

This tryout is open to current college-age athletes and athletes who were born in the years 1990-2000 inclusive. Athletes born before 1990 must contact USA Volleyball at indoorhp@usav.org for approval of participation.

Note: Per NCAA legislation (NCAA bylaw 16.8.1.1) it is allowable for an institution, if it so chooses, to pay necessary expenses for its athlete to attend a National Team tryout.

Travel: Athletes should plan to arrive in Anaheim in the evening on Dec. 16. Early check-in and open gym will be available for athletes that night, with the tryout beginning Dec. 17 in the morning. Athletes should plan to depart after the last session on Dec. 18. Tentatively, the tryout will end at noon on Dec. 18, and flight times are suggested for after 3 p.m.

Beach Add-on Event

Those who have signed up for the indoor tryout have the option of staying for additional beach training on Dec. 18-19.

U.S. Beach National Teams Director of Coaching Tyler Hildebrand will lead the training along with fellow U.S. coaches, High Performance coaches and beach national team members. Athletes will be divided into groups based on level and experience with beach volleyball. New and experienced beach players are welcome.

Skills and systems to be covered include:

  • Setting: hand setting and bump setting
  • Attacking: approach lines, vision training, shot selection
  • Blocking: Lining up, vision sequence, moves with the arms
  • Serving/Passing: Where to serve, what types of serves; passing mechanics and different passing systems
  • Offensive Systems: What are the top teams doing to score?
  • Defensive Systems: How are the top teams creating real points? Game-within-the-game strategies.

Registration

Registration requires an access code as spots are limited by position. Please email lizzy.briones@usav.org with your position, and a code will be provided with availability. Registration closes Dec. 7.

To register:

  1. Create an account (select "first-time visitor, click here) or log in to your existing account in our registration system.
  2. Register for the event
    • On the home page after you have logged in, select “click here to register for High Performance tryouts.”
    • Select the 2018 U.S. Men’s National Team Open Tryout from the list of available events, then select “next.”
    • Continue through the registration process. Make sure that you select “Check-Out” on the last step prior to submitting your registration. Your registration will not be considered complete until payment has been received.

Registration FAQ

Does each individual athlete need to have their own account in order to register?

Yes, all athletes must have unique accounts in order to register for this event. Group registrations are not permitted.

If you would like to submit payment on behalf of one or more athletes via invoice or mailed check, please email indoorhp@usav.org to request an alternative form of payment. Once approved, you will then receive a registration code that will allow you to bypass payment at the time of registration, but all athletes must register online through the Ex3 platform.

Required Forms

  • 2018-2019 USA Volleyball Medical Release Form – All athletes must bring a physical, completed copy of the medical release form with you to the tryout. You will turn in this form during check-in. Do not send in your medical release prior to arrival.

  • Copy of Insurance Card - Tryout participants are required to provide proof of valid health insurance coverage upon their arrival at the tryout. USA Volleyball will provide sport accident insurance for injuries sustained during the tryout process. This will be a supplemental coverage to their personal coverage and does not cover non-tryout related illness or injury.

Eligibility

The tryout is open only to U.S. citizens meeting the age requirements previously addressed at the top of this page.

Participating athletes, regardless of age, must possess a working knowledge of offensive/defensive systems and terminology consistent with that of a typical mid to high level collegiate program.

Participating athletes must also possess a level of athleticism, fitness and technical ability consistent with that of a high level collegiate player.

Participants unable to meet these requirements will not be accepted for the tryout or may be removed from further tryout participation. No refunds will be offered in the latter case.

Results

U.S. Men's Senior National Team – Athletes who have concluded their college eligibility and who wish to be invited to be a member of the U.S. Men’s Volleyball National Team on a full-time basis are required to take this tryout process. Men's National Team Training could begin as early as the spring of 2019, or when an athlete’s scholastic or professional club season has concluded.

Athletes who have remaining college eligibility are still in contention and evaluation for the Men's Senior National Team. Their participation will begin in mid-May or when their scholastic calendar ends for 2019.

U.S. Men’s Collegiate National Teams (CNT) – Athletes born 2000 or earlier and with collegiate eligibility remaining for the 2019 collegiate season may also be invited to participate with one of three possible U.S. Collegiate National Teams (CNT).

**All three CNT programs are considered extended tryouts for the U.S.Men's National Team and are thereby eligible for necessary expenses to be paid for by the athlete’s school if that school so chooses.

U.S. Men's Junior National Team (MJNT) – Athletes born in the years 1999 and 2000 only are eligible for the Men’s Junior National Team. The MJNT will be representing USA in an international qualifying event in the spring/early summer of 2019 for a bid to the FIVB U21 World Championships in Bahrain. Athletes from this age range will be eligible for both the qualifying team and the World Championship team through this tryout process.
