U.S. Men Play Each Other at Club World Champs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Nov. 26, 2018)Erik and Kawika Shoji, David Smith and Aaron Russell won big matches with their respective international club teams on Monday at the FIVB Men’s Club World Championship in Poland.

Libero Erik Shoji and his Russian squad Fakel Novy Urengoi beat opposite Matt Anderson and his Russian team Zenit Kazan, the tournament’s defending champion, 25-23, 26-28, 21-25, 25-22, 15-11 in Płock, Poland.

Anderson scored 17 points on 14 kills, two blocks and one ace. Statistics for Shoji were not available.

“Coming into this tournament I don’t know what people thought we would do, but we’re here to win,” Shoji told the FIVB. “It’s a great win for us for sure. Out block did a really good job when (Kazan was) out of system. We knew they were going to serve hard and we needed to defend against the serve. I have played against all of these guys on the national team, so I know them.”

At the same time in Rzeszów, Poland, setter Kawika Shoji, middle blocker David Smith and their Polish team Asseco Resovia Rzeszów won a tough match against outside hitter Taylor Sander and Brazil’s Sada Cruzeiro, 23-25, 25-18, 25-23, 24-26, 17-15.

Smith scored eight points on four kills and four blocks. Shoji scored three points on one kill, one block and one ace and set Rzeszow to a 41.5 kill percentage.

Sander scored 21 points for Cruzeiro on 16 kills, four blocks and one ace.

Russell and his Italian club team Trentino Volley beat Iran’s Khatam Ardakan, 25-19, 25-15, 25-19. Russell scored 10 points on nine kills and one block.

Taylor Sander’s brother Branden Sander and his Italian team Cucine Lube Civitanova beat Poland’s Skra Belchatow in Płock, 25-21, 22-25, 25-21, 27-25. Sander did not play in the match.
