COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (March 14, 2018) – The U.S. Women’s Sitting Team is back together and hitting the road for some international competition this weekend at the Colorado Crossroads Qualifier.
The 2016 Paralympic gold medalists will play matches against Canada and Russia at the Colorado Convention Center.
“It’ll be the first time that we’ve had the whole team together,” Head Coach Bill Hamiter said. “Last year, early in the season, we had some but not others. Then we flip-flopped.”
Having the entire team together this season is important as it focuses on the 2018 World Championships on July 15-22 in the Netherlands. The Women’s Sitting Team finished second to China at the last two World Championships, which are held every four years.
But after winning the Paralympic gold medal in 2016 and being ranked No. 1 in the word, the U.S. Women will be considered favorites to win at the 2018 World Championships.
“I think there probably is some pressure,” Hamiter said. “I don’t get the sense they feel like it’s a lot of pressure. It’s definitely on our radar. It’s one of our goals.”
The team will play matches against Russia, ranked No. 7 in the world, and No. 9 Canada. Russia defeated the U.S. Women early in the season last year at the World ParaVolley World Super 6 tournament in China.
“Russia, in my estimation, is one of the best teams in the world right now,” Hamiter said. “This may be the only chance we get to play them before the World Championships.
“Canada is moving up. They are playing much better. This helps them get some more good matches under their belts.”
The U.S. Women’s Sitting Team matches will be played on a special court within the Crossroads Qualifier in the Colorado Convention Center. They will sign autographs following their matches.
