COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – As the beach volleyball schedule winds to a close, two U.S. teams reached the podium over the weekend at the FIVB Aalsmeer 1-Star tournament in The Netherlands.
Bill Kolinske and Miles Evans finished with a career best second-place, and Betsi Flint and Kelley Larsen earned their third podium appearance of the year with a bronze medal.
Starting with a victory in the qualification tournament, Kolinske/Evans went 4-1 at the Aalsmeer 1-Star tournament to earn a silver medal. In the quarterfinal, the pair swept a local Dutch team 21-12, 21-13. They then followed with a closely fought semifinal match against Turkey, winning 15-21, 21-17, 15-13. In the gold medal match, the pair trailed to Italy's Marco Caminati/Enrico Rossi and were unable to catch up, eventually falling 21-18, 21-15.
For Flint and Larsen, the duo earned their first-round match against France 21-19, 21-19. In the quarterfinal, they outlasted fellow Americans, Kimberly DiCello/Emily Stockman, 21-9, 21-17. DiCello/Stockman earned a victory against The Netherlands in the first round before being eliminated and tying for fifth.
In the women's semifinal, Germany's Kim Behrens/Sandra Ittlinger got the best of Flint/Larsen, taking the match 21-17, 16-21, 15-9. The U.S. duo collected themselves for Sunday's medal match, earning bronze with a 25-23, 21-18 defeat of Japan.
