The inaugural Collegiate Beach Championships was hosted in 2017 in partnership with the Team USA Summer Championship Series. In 2018, the dual-gendered event will return to Hermosa Beach with up to a 32-team bracket, per gender.
The qualification tournament will be played May 9, followed by a main draw tournament which consists of pool play and a single elimination bracket May 10-12. The finals will be televised on NBCSN from 4-6 p.m. ET on May 12.
The top eight schools that qualify for the NCAA Beach Volleyball Championships will earn one bid, pending the committee's approval, while the remaining 24 teams will be selected by committee based on merit from the USAV Beach Ranking and NCAA results, or enter through the qualification tournament. Athletes will enter the competition as representatives of their university, with both athletes in a pair hailing from the same school. The men's tournament will not consist of automatic bids and will instead all be decided on approval from the selection committee.
The Collegiate Beach Championships serve as a Trials for international competition, therefore, athletes competing must be a citizen of the United States of America at the time of nomination, be officially registered as progressing towards a degree or diploma at a university, and meet the International Federation, FIVB, requirements to compete. Winning teams will qualify to represent USA Volleyball at the 2018 FISU Beach Volleyball World University Championship in Germany, July 9-13.
Nominations for entry will open in March, and close in late April. The Selection Committee will be confirmed in early April and will consist of USAV staff members, AVCA representation, Athlete Representatives and coaches from NCAA beach volleyball schools and indoor men's volleyball schools.
USA Volleyball is the National Governing Body (NGB) for the sport of volleyball in the United States and is recognized as such by the Federation Internationale de Volleyball and the United States Olympic Committee (USOC).
