US WJNT defeats Israeli National Team 3-1

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (July 8, 2015)— Outside hitter Rhamat Alhassan (Glenarden, Md., University of Florida), hammered out a match-high 21 points as the U.S. Women’s Junior National Team rolled past the Israeli National Team 25-20, 22-25, 25-19, 29-27 in match three of the Pre-Global Challenge in Maribor, Slovenia on Wednesday. USA also won 15-13 in a non-counting fifth set in the match against former U.S. National Team Coach Arie Selinger, head coach of the Israeli National Team.

“It was an honor to coach in a match with legendary coach Arie Selinger,” said U.S. Women’s Junior National Team Head Coach Tom Hogan. “Not only was he the first USA women’s coach to medal in the Olympic Games, but he was a key figure in the development of women’s volleyball in the United States.”

Alhassan bolstered the offense with 21 points via 12 kills on 19 attempts, two aces and seven blocks. Outside hitter Hayley Hodson (Newport Beach, Calif., Stanford University) added 14 points via 10 kills and four aces. Opposite Audriana Fitzmorris (Overland Park, Kan., St. James Academy) and outside hitter Lauren Gillis (New Castle, Ind., University of Wisconsin) each scored 11 points and had four and two blocks, respectively. Outside hitter Carlie Snyder tailed 7 points on four kills, one block and two aces in her two sets played.

“Our team has continued to improve and grow over the five days we have been together,” Hogan said. “Our ball control and serve-pass game continue to be a focus and tonight we took a step in the right direction.”

Outside hitter Adora Anae (Laie, Hawaii, University of Utah) and Orie Agbaji (Kansas City, Mo., Oak Park High School) each tallied five points, while Danielle Cuttino (Indianapolis, Ind., Purdue University) notched four.

Setters Jordyn Pouler (Aurora, Colo., University of Illinois) and Taylor Tashima (Wilmette, Ill., Northwestern University) each added points to the board. Poulter had two blocks, one kill and one ace, and Tashima scored two kills and one ace. The setting tandem helped the U.S. to a 40.6 kill percent with a .232 hitting efficiency (56-24-138).

The two liberos, Molly Sauer (Louisville, Ky., University of Louisville) and Caroline Knop (Pasadena, Calif., University of Michigan), each contributed one point. Sauer handled 21 receptions with a 57 positive percent, while Knop was 63 percent positive on 19 chances.

Team USA out blocked Israel 20-3 and its serve netted 11 aces on 107 attempts to the Israeli’s seven aces. The Israeli’s held a 58-56 margin in kills while converting 36.9 percent of its attacks with a .153 hitting efficiency (58-34-157).

The Americans are now 1-2 in the Pre-Global Challenge and will next face Nova Katrem Branik on Friday. All matches are exhibitions leading up to the 2015 European Global Challenge in Pula, Croatia, which is being held July 13-16.
