U.S. Men's Update: Tweets from the Road

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Feb. 10, 2015) – U.S. Men’s Assistant Coach Matt Fuerbringer has been on the road this week visiting players who are competing overseas. Here are a few of his tweets along the way.

WORLD LEAGUE

The U.S. Men’s Volleyball Team, the 2014 FIVB World League champion, will begin defense of the title in Southern California and Hoffman Estates, Ill., this summer.

USA Volleyball will host Iran at the Galen Center in Los Angeles (May 30-31), Russia at the Walter Pyramid in Long Beach, Calif. (June 5-6), and Poland at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, Ill. (June 12-13).

Tickets are on sale now for both Southern California matches. Individual tickets for the matches in Hoffman Estates will go on sale March 9. Group sales for Hoffman Estates are available now by calling (847) 649-2451.

POLAND

In a battle of two teams with U.S. players, Asseco Resovia Rzeszów defeated Lotos Trefl Gdansk, 25-19, 25-22, 19-25, 26-24 on Feb. 7. Opposite Murphy Troy (St. Louis, Mo.) of Gdansk led all scorers with 23 points on 21 kills and two aces. Russell Holmes and Paul Lotman played as substitutes for Rzeszów. Rzeszów is in second place in the league and Gdansk is in fourth.

AJ Nally (Rochester, N.Y.) played as a libero for Transfer Bydgoszcz in its loss to Jastrzebski Wegiel, 27-25, 25-23, 25-23 on Feb. 7.  He was credited with 27 receptions, 48 percent positive.

GERMANY

The Berlin Recycling Volleys, including libero Erik Shoji (Honolulu, Hawaii), setter Kawika Shoji (Honolulu, Hawaii) and outside hitter Scott Touzinsky (St. Louis, Mo.), defeated VCO Berlin, 25-15, 25-19, 25-17 on Feb. 6. Touzinsky started the first two sets and scored five points with five kills. Kawika Shoji also started the first two sets and helped his team to a .519 hitting efficiency. Erik Shoji played the second and third sets and was credited with eight receptions, 75 percent positive.

Middle blocker Nick Vogel and VfB Fridrichshafen won their last two matches. On Feb. 7, Freidrichshafen beat Netzhoppers KW-Bestensee, 25-19, 25-16, 25-17. Vogel scored six points on four kills and two blocks. On Feb. 8, Friedrichshafen defeated VCO Berlin, 25-20, 25-16, 25-12. Vogel scored 10 points on nine kills and one block.

B.J. Boldog (Palatine, Ill.) and CV Mitteldeutschland fell to TSV Herrsching, 25-23, 18-25, 25-21, 25-23 on Feb. 7. Boldog played the final two sets and scored one point with a kill.

ITALY

On Feb. 8, outside hitter Taylor Sander (Huntington Beach, Calif.) led his team with 24 points and was named the match MVP as his Italian team Calzedonia Verona defeated Sir Safety Perugia and outside hitter Joe Sunder (Greensburg, Pa.), 34-32, 25-20, 18-25, 18-25, 17-15. Sander scored on 21 kills, two blocks and one ace. He was also credited with 16 receptions, 50 percent positive. Sunder played as a substitute and did not score. Verona is in fourth place in the league and Perugia is in fifth.

Setter Riley McKibbin (Honolulu, Hawaii) played as a substitute as his Italian team CMC Ravenna fell to Vero Volley Monza, 25-23, 25-22, 25-21 on Feb. 8.

RUSSIA

Middle blocker Max Holt (Cincinnati) led all scorers with 14 points as his Russian team Dinamo Moscow defeated Neftanik Orenburg, 25-14, 25-15, 25-21 on Feb. 7. Holt scored on six kills, a match-high five blocks and a match-high three aces.
GREECE

Opposite Carson Clark (Santa Barbara, Calif.) led his team with 13 points as Olympiacos defeated Ethnikos Alexandroupolis, 25-17, 25-23, 15-25, 12-25, 17-15. Clark scored on 12 kills and one ace. Setter Chris Austin (Henderson, Nev.) plays for Alexandroupolis but did not play in the match.

Outside hitter Brian Cook scored 17 points for Panathanaikos as it defeated A.E.K., 25-16, 25-20, 25-16 on Feb. 8. Cook scored on 13 kills and a match-high four aces.

FRANCE

Libero Dustin Watten (Long Beach, Calif.) and his French team Ajaccio beat Nantes Rezé, 25-13, 23-25, 22-25, 25-17, 15-13.

Middle blockers David Smith (Saugus, Calif.) and Dan McDonnell (Glendale, Ariz.) and their French team Tours fell to Lyon, 21-25, 25-15, 17-25, 25-17, 15-12 on Feb. 5. Smith scored nine points on five kills, two blocks and two aces. McDonnell added seven points on six kills and one ace.

Outside hitter Connor Hughes (Costa Mesa, Calif.) scored three points for Montpellier in a loss to St-Nazaire, 27-25, 26-28, 25-17, 25-21 on Feb. 7. Hughes played in the second and third sets and scored on three kills.

Taylor Crabb (Honolulu, Hawaii) and his French team Sète lost to Toulouse, 25-20, 22-25, 26-28, 25-17, 15-8 on Feb. 6. Crabb played the final three sets and scored seven points on six kills and one block. He was also credited with 22 receptions, 100 percent positive.

CEV CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

The playoff matches for the CEV Champions League have been set. Each team will play one match at home and one away. Champions League matches are streamed live and also archived at laola1.tv.
