U.S. Beach Teams Fall at Sao Paulo

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Sept. 26, 2014) – Seven U.S. women’s and men’s beach volleyball teams all completed match action at the FIVB Sao Paulo Grand Slam in Brazil on Friday.

April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Kerri Walsh Jennings (Saratoga, Calif.), seeded No. 2, finished the tournament tied for fifth. The team defeated Germany’s No. 6 Karla Borger and Britta Buthe in the second round, 21-12, 21-10. But in the third round, they fell to Italy’s No. 11 Marta Menegatti and Viktoria Orsi Toth, 21-16, 21-17.

Lane Carico (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and Kim DiCello (San Diego, Calif.), seeded No. 23, defeated Germany’s No. 3 Katrin Holtwick and Ilka Semmler in the first round, 17-21, 22-20, 15-13. But Carico and Dicello also fell to Italy’s Menegatti and Orsi Toth, 21-16, 21-19 in the second round. They finished the tournament tied for ninth.

The tournament was Carico and DiCello’s first FIVB event as a team and the best finish at an FIVB Grand Slam for either athlete.

Emily Day (Torrance, Calif.) and Summer Ross (Carlsbad, Calif.), seeded No. 16, fell to Germany’s Borger and Buthe in the first round, 19-21, 21-14, 15-10. The U.S. pair finished the tournament tied for 17th.

Heather Hughes (Fallbrook, Calif.) and Brittany Hochevar (Fowler, Colo.), seeded No. 24, fell to Canada’s No. 18 Melissa Humana-Paredes and Taylor Pischke in the first round, 21-13, 21-18. They finished the tournament tied for 17th.

All three U.S. men’s teams still playing in Sao Paulo finished the tournament tied for ninth after falling in the second round.

John Hyden (Pensacola, Fla.) and Tri Bourne (Aiea, Hawaii), seeded No. 5, were upset by Turkey’s No. 26 Volkan Gogtepe and Murat Giginoglu, 17-21, 21-16, 17-15.

Jake Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Casey Patterson (Van Nuys, Calif.), seeded No. 9, lost to Poland’s No. 16 Bartosz Losiak and Piotr Kantor in the second round, 21-17, 21-19.

John Mayer (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) and Theodore Brunner (Ridgefield, Conn.), competing in their first FIVB event as a team and seeded No. 27, defeated Italy’s No. 18 Andrea Tomatis and Alex Ranghieri in the first round 21-19, 21-15. But they fell to Netherlands’ No. 13 Christiaan Varenhorst and Reinder Nummerdor, 21-15, 21-15, in the second round.
