Off the Court: With April Ross

By Tyson Rodgers | Nov. 24, 2014, 10:43 a.m. (ET)

This week we caught up with beach star April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif./ Twitter/ Instagram) for a short Q&A.

The Olympic silver medalist was named the AVP's Most Valuable Female Player last week, while also garnering the award for Female Team of the Year with partner Kerri Walsh Jennings (Saratoga, Calif.) The pair won seven of AVP tournaments and four FIVB gold medals this season.

First thing I look forward to when coming home...
I look forward to so many things when I come home, but mainly seeing my husband (Brad Keenan), snuggling with my cat, sleeping in my own bed, and home cooked meals!!

Besides volleyball, most of my time is spent…
Most of my time outside of volleyball is spent in the weight room.  If you're asking outside of that, then probably at Whole Foods.  I like to eat, get coffee, shop, wine taste, blog, answer emails, read, and journal there... and there's a fire pit at the one I go to so, yeah, I spend a lot of time there.

One embarrassing thing about me is...
I'm principally against being embarrassed, I think you should just be proud of and accept who you are, even when you mess up. If I have to pick something, I guess that fact that I like to visit my local library and study random things is a little embarrassing to admit, but I still stand by it as a legit pastime- way better than watching TV!

What skill I want to get better at or I am trying to get better at...
I have a compulsion to pick up new hobbies, so I'm a beginner at a lot of things that I want to get better at. I just recently started surfing and love it, so right now I'm focused on improving my ability to surf.

Before volleyball I was into...
Soccer! I thought it was the sport I would play forever, I loved it, and played club up until eighth grade when my team folded. Luckily my dad convinced me to try out for volleyball after that.

Three things I would take with me on a deserted island...
Things- surfboard, book, and sweatpants, because those just seem like the keys to a great day that I could relive over and over again. If people are allowed I'd bring a mechanical engineer, an oceanographer, and a satellite phone, so I could get off the island and come home :)

People tell me I am good at...
Eating pizza, because I can eat A LOT of it. I'm also good at Scattergories and Clue.

Something I am horrible at...
Singing and acting... I don't know why except I never learned how to do either.

Something everyone else likes that I don’t understand...
Beyonce... You DID NOT wake up like that.

What is your favorite memory or thing about Thanksgiving...
Well, my favorite thing about THIS Thanksgiving is that my sister is getting married that weekend in Montana so our whole family and her fiance's will be there for the week! I can't wait!
