Fopma, Pavlik Qualify for Stavanger Main Draw

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (June 24, 2014) – The U.S. women’s beach team of Jennifer Fopma and Whitney Pavlik qualified on Tuesday for the main draw at the FIVB Stavanger Grand Slam in Norway.

Fopma (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Pavlik (Laguna Beach, Calif.) are seeded No. 27 in the main draw and will join three other U.S. teams in starting main draw play on Wednesday. On Tuesday, the U.S. pair, seeded No. 6 in qualifying, defeated Italy’s Gioria Daniela and Laura Giombini, 21-17, 24-22, to advance.

Kerri Walsh Jennings (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) are seeded first in Stavanger.  Emily Day (Torrance, Calif.) and Summer Ross (Carlsbad, Calif.) are seeded No. 13. Lauren Fendrick (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Brooke Sweat (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) are seeded No. 14.

Men’s qualifying begins on Wednesday. Ryan Doherty (Toms River, N.J.) and Nick Lucena (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), who won the silver medal last weekend at the Berlin Grand Slam, are seeded No. 1 in qualifying.  John Hyden (Pensacola, Fla.) and Tri Bourne (Aiea, Hawaii), who finished first in Berlin, are seeded No. 3. Both advanced straight to the second round of qualifying where they await their opponents.

The U.S. men’s beach teams of Phil Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Fla.) and Sean Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Fla.) and also Jake Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Casey Patterson (Van Nuys, Calif.) were entered straight into the main draw and will begin play on Thursday.
