Two U.S. Men's Beach Teams to Play for Medals

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (July 12, 2014) – Two U.S. men’s beach teams have advanced to Sunday’s medal matches of the FIVB Gstaad Grand Slam in Switzerland.

Top-seeded Phil Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Fla.) and Sean Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Calif.) are set to play in the gold medal match against Brazil’s No. 4 Alison Cerutti and Bruno Oscar Schmidt while No. 16 Nick Lucena (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and Ryan Doherty (Toms River, N.J.) will play Germany’s No. 12 Jonathan Erdmann and Kay Matysik for the bronze medal.

To get to the gold medal match, Dalhausser and Rosenthal had to defeat Lucena and Doherty in Saturday’s semifinal, 15-21, 21-17, 15-13.

Dalhausser and Rosenthal advanced to the semifinals by beating Austria’s No. 27 Alexander Huber and Robin Seidl 21-18, 21-14 in Round 2 and Brazil’s No. 8 Ricardo Alex Costa Santos and Alvaro Morais Filho, 21-15, 21-12 in the third round.

Lucena and Doherty advanced to the semifinals by defeating Brazil’s No. 3 Emanuel Rego and Pedro Solberg Salgado in round two, 21-19, 23-21, then Spain’s No. 7 Pablo Herrera Allepuz and Adrian Gavira Collado in round three, 21-18, 21-18.

Jake Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Casey Patterson (Van Nuys, Calif.) lost to Brazil’s No. 8 Santos and Filho, 21-16, 25-27, 11-15, in Round 2 on Saturday. They finished the tournament tied for ninth place.
