COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (July 8, 2014) – The U.S. women’s beach team of Jennifer Fopma and Whitney Pavlik qualified on Tuesday for the main draw on a cool and rainy day at the FIVB Gstaad Grand Slam in Switzerland.
Fopma (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Pavlik (Laguna Beach, Calif.) are seeded No. 29 in the main draw and will join three other U.S. teams on Wednesday when main draw play starts. On Tuesday, the U.S. pair, seeded No. 9 in qualifying, defeated Switzerland’s No. 24 Kim Huber and Saskia Seghers, 21-9, 21-14, and then beat Netherland’s No. 8 Rimke Braakman and Jantine van der Vilst, 21-15, 23-21, to advance.
Kerri Walsh Jennings (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) are seeded first in the Gstaad main draw. Lauren Fendrick (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Brooke Sweat (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) are seeded No. 12. Emily Day (Torrance, Calif.) and Summer Ross (Carlsbad, Calif.) are seeded No. 16.
Men’s qualifying begins on Wednesday. Ryan Doherty (Toms River, N.J.) and Nick Lucena (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) are seeded No. 2 in qualifying. Todd Rogers (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Theo Brunner (Ridgefield, Conn.), participating in their second World Tour event, are seeded No. 7. Both teams will have a bye through the first round.
The U.S. beach teams of Phil Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Fla.) and Sean Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Calif.) and also Jake Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Casey Patterson (Van Nuys, Calif.) were entered straight into the main draw and will begin play on Thursday.
