COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Dec. 12, 2013) – The U.S. women’s beach team of Lane Carico and Kim DiCello has advanced to Saturday’s semifinals of the FIVB Mangaung Open in South Africa.

On Friday, Carico (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and DiCello (San Diego, Calif.) went 2-0, defeating Finland’s No. 2 Taru Lahti and Riikka Lehtonen (21-11, 21-14) in the second round and Italy’s No. 8 Giulia Momoli and Laura Giombini (21-16, 21-17) in the third.
On Saturday, the U.S. team will play Czech Republic’s No. 4 Martina Bonnerová and Barbora Hermannová in the first semifinal. Russia’s No. 3 Evgenia Ukolova and Maria Prokopeva will play Japan’s No. 15 Takemi Nishibori and Sayaka Mizoe in the second.
The medal matches will be played on Sunday.
On the men’s side, the No. 2 seeded team of Nick Lucena (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and Theo Brunner (Ridgefield, Conn.) won its second-round match against No. 9 Grant Goldschmidt and Leo Williams of South Africa, 21-17, 21-10. However the U.S. pair was upset in the third round by Chile’s No. 5 Esteban and Marco Grimalt, 21-15, 16-21, 18-16. They finished tied for fifth.
Jeremy Casebeer (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Will Montgomery (Santa Barbara, Calif.), seeded No. 20, lost their second-round match to France’s No. 3 Youssef Krou and Edouard Rowlandson, 21-12, 21-18 and finished tied for ninth.
