U.S. Beach Teams Win Gold, Silver in Cuba

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Aug. 24, 2014) – The U.S. men’s beach team of Todd Rogers and Theo Brunner took gold while Tealle Hunkus and Kim DiCello won silver on Sunday at the NORCECA Beach Tour event in Varadero, Cuba.

Rogers (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Brunner (Ridgefield, Conn.) defeated Cuba’s Sergio Gonzalez and Nivaldo Diaz, 13-21, 21-18, 15-11 in Sunday’s gold medal match. In the semifinals, the U.S. pair beat Canada’s Grant O’Gorman and Sam Pedlow, 21-19, 21-15.

In the quarterfinals, Rogers and Brunner defeated their compatriots, Billy Allen (Fallbrook, Calif.) and Trevor Crabb (Redondo Beach, Calif.), 19-21, 21-18, 15-9, eliminating them from the tournament. Allen and Crabb finished fifth.

Rogers and Brunner finished the tournament with a record of 5-1. Their only loss came to Gonzalez and Diaz in pool play.

Hunkus and DiCello won their semifinal match over Mexico’s Martha Revuelta and Bibiana Candelas, 19-21, 21-16, 15-8. However, they fell in the gold medal match to Cuba’s Lianma Flores and Leila Martinez, 21-17, 20-22, 15-8. The U.S. pair finished the tournament 5-1.

The U.S. women’s beach team of Sarah Day (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Briana Hinga (Santa Cruz, Calif.) finished fourth. The pair went 3-0 in pool play and won their quarterfinal match over Costa Rica’s Karen Cope and Natalia Alfaro, 14-21, 21-11, 15-12.

But Day and Hingis fell in the semifinals to Martinez and Flores, 14-21, 21-15, 15-10. They lost the third-place match to Revuelta and Candelas, 21-12, 21-15.
