U.S. Men's Update: Titles in Germany, France

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (May 6, 2013) – All the news about U.S. men’s volleyball players in the United States and around the world.


U.S. outside hitter Scott Touzinsky (St. Louis, Mo.), a 2008 Olympian, setter Kawika Shoji (Honolulu, Hawaii) and the German league team the Berlin Recycling Volleys won the league title, defeating U.S. middle blocker Matt Denmark (Edmond, Okla.) VfB Friedrichshafen, 3-1.

On May 2, Friedrichshafen defeated host Berlin, 25-22, 25-21, 23-25, 25-20. Touzinsky scored four points on two attacks and two blocks. He was credited with 21 receptions, 62 percent positive. Shoji scored three points on one kill, one block and one ace. He set Berlin to a 41.8 kill percent and a .319 hitting efficiency. Denmark played as a substitute in the match and did not score. To view photos of the match, click here. On May 5, visiting Berlin came back to defeat Friedrichshafen, 25-23, 25-22, 23-25, 22-25, 15-11. Touzinsky scored two points on two kills. Shoji added three points on three blocks. He also set Berlin to a 44.7 kill percent and a .407 hitting efficiency. Denmark played as a substitute and did not score.


U.S. middle blocker David Smith (Saugus, Calif.), a 2012 Olympian, and the French league team Tours won the league title with two straight match victories over Paris. On April 30, Tours defeated Paris, 25-17, 16-25, 25-21, 25-14. Smith scored 10 points on seven attacks (87.5 kill percent, .875 hitting efficiency), two blocks and one ace. On May 5, Tours beat Paris, 25-17, 25-17, 25-22. Smith scored five points on three kills and two blocks.


U.S. middle blocker Max Holt (Cincinnati, Ohio) and his Italian Serie A league team Copra Elior Piacenza are 2-2 against defending champion Itas Diatec Trentino in the league finals, with the deciding match to be played May 12 in Trentino. So far, the home team has won each match of the series. On May 1, Trentino defeated Piacenza, 25-12, 25-18, 25-19. Holt scored three points on two kills and one block. On May 5, Piacenza beat Trentino, 25-22, 25-19, 25-20. Holt scored seven points on two attacks, one block and a match-high four aces.


U.S. outside hitter Matt Anderson (West Seneca, N.Y.), a 2012 Olympian, and his Russian Super League team Zenit Kazan fell in the semifinals of the Russian Super League playoffs and will begin a series to determine the third-place team on May 7. On April 30, visiting Kazan, the defending league champion, lost to Lokomotiv Belogorie, 20-25, 25-18, 25-18, 25-16. Anderson scored 14 points on 13 kills and one block. The U.S. Men’s National Volleyball Team will play Argentina on June 7-8 at Charles Koch Arena in Wichita, Kan. It will play France on June 14-15 at the Tulsa Convention Center Arena in Reno Nev. It will play Bulgaria on June 28-29 at the Reno Events Center in Reno, Nev.
