Fopma, Sweat Reach Berlin Beach Semis

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Aug. 10, 2013) – Jennifer Fopma and Brooke Sweat are guaranteed the best international finish of their careers after they advanced to Sunday’s semifinals of the FIVB Beach Volleyball Berlin Grand Slam in Germany.

Fopma (Bellflower, Calif.) and Sweat (Fort Myers, Fla.), seeded No. 16 in the main draw, won two matches on Saturday to advance to Sunday’s semifinals, where they will face Germany’s No. 1 seeded Katrin Holtwick and Ilka Semmler.

In the second round of single elimination on Saturday, Fopma and Sweat defeated compatriots Jennifer Kessy (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) and April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.), seeded No. 5, 21-12, 21-13 in 32 minutes. Kessy and Ross finished the tournament tied for ninth.

In Saturday’s third round, Fopma and Sweat beat Russia’s No. 27 Svetlana Popova and Maria Prokopeva, 21-17, 21-19 in 33 minutes.

Fopma and Sweat’s previous best international finish was a fifth place at the FIVB Gstaad Grand Slam in Switzerland. They also finished ninth at the Grand Slams in Rome and Long Beach, Calif.

The Berlin smart Grand Slam is the seventh Grand Slam on the 2013 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour, which is comprised of 10 Grand Slam events and the 2013 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships. There are also eight Open events and while they are not part of the World Tour, they still count towards the FIVB World Rankings and help open the door for development of the sport.

The tournament concludes with the women’s gold and bronze medal matches on Sunday August 11, while the men’s medal matches take place on Saturday August 10.
