Men’s pool play will be completed on Thursday when the women’s pool play will begin. The U.S. team of Morgan (Beck) Miller (Cote de Caza, Calif.) and Heather Hughes (Fallbrook, Calif.) lost in the second round of qualifying on Wednesday.

Four U.S. women’s teams are already entered into the Berlin main draw.

Jennifer Kessy (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) and April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) would like to reach their second FIVB beach volleyball podium of the season after a second-place finish at the Moscow Grand Slam. They finished tied for ninth most recently at the Long Beach Grand Slam.

The U.S. teams of Lauren Fendrick (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Brittany Hochevar (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) along with Jennifer Fopma (Bellflower, Calif.) and Brooke Sweat (Fort Myers, Fla.) have played well this season and have finished tied for fifth, but have yet to crack an FIVB semifinal.

The new U.S. team of Emily Day (Torrance, Calif.) and Whitney Pavlik (Laguna Beach, Calif.) received a wild card into the main draw and will be looking to make a statement.

The Berlin smart Grand Slam is the seventh Grand Slam on the 2013 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour, which is comprised of 10 Grand Slam events and the 2013 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships. There are also eight Open events and while they are not part of the World Tour, they still count towards the FIVB World Rankings and help open the door for development of the sport.

The tournament concludes with the women’s gold and bronze medal matches on Sunday August 11, while the men’s medal matches take place on Saturday August 10.
