Pepperdine's Frederick, Hill Win Beach Challenge Pairs Title

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (April 21, 2013) – Pepperdine’s No. 1 sand volleyball team of Lilla Frederick and Kim Hill finished their regular season undefeated at 26-0 as they won the pairs title on Sunday at the USA Volleyball Beach Collegiate Challenge in Hermosa Beach, Calif.

Frederick and Hill defeated the No. 1 team from the University of Southern California (USC), Kirby Burnham and Stevi Robinson, in the gold division final, 21-19, 21-18. Frederick and Hill also won the first 2013 USAV Beach Collegiate Challenge, which was held in March in Chula Vista, Calif.

Pepperdine won the team title at the Beach Collegiate Challenge on Saturday while Long Beach State finished second. On Sunday, pairs teams from CSU Bakersfield, LBSU, Hawaii, Loyola Marymount, Pepperdine USC, Santa Clara, UCLA and USC competed in bracket play in gold (Nos. 1 and 2 teams), silver (Nos. 3 and 4 teams) and bronze (No. 5 teams) divisions.

Frederick and Hill, the top seeds in the gold division, did not lose a set on the day as they defeated Hawaii’s No. 2 team of Katie Spieler and Ginger Long (21-15, 21-11), Santa Clara’s No. 1 team of Taylor Milton and Dani Rottman (21-13, 21-13) and UCLA’s No. 1 team of Meg Norton and Kelly Reeves (22-20, 21-17) in reaching the finals.

Burnham and Robinson were seeded third in the gold division, and advanced by defeating Long Beach State’s No. 2 team of Bre Mackie and Libby Fontanilla (21-7, 21-14), Santa Clara’s No. 2 team of Haley Cameron and Alyssa Anderson (21-10, 21-12) and Pepperdine’s No. 2 team of Lara Dykstra and Caitlin Racich (21-18, 21-10).

Long Beach State’s No. 4 team of Janisa Johnson and Tyler Jackson won the silver division, defeating Pepperdine’s No. 3 team of Kellie Larsen and Kellie Woolever, 23-21, 18-21, 15-11 in the final.

In the bronze division, Pepperdine’s No. 5 team of Emily Cook and Katie Messing won the final with a 21-15, 15-21, 15-12 victory over USC’s No. 5 Sam Hirschmann and Natasa Siljkovic.

Many players in the tournament are members of USAV's Beach High Performance Program, which prepares beach volleyball athletes for international competition.

Along with their trophies, pairs who competed Sunday received ranking points toward qualifying for the pair competition of the AVCA Sand Volleyball Collegiate Championships on May 3-5 in Gulf Shores, Ala.
