Three U.S. Beach Teams Surge in Guatemala

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (April 19, 2013) – Two U.S. women’s beach volleyball teams and one men’s team went undefeated on Friday on the first day of the NORCECA Beach Circuit event in Guatemala.

The event is the third on the NORCECA beach tour this year.

The women’s USA-1 team of Jenny Kropp (Grand Island, Neb.) and Whitney Pavlik (Laguna Beach, Calif.) won its only pool play match of the day, defeating the Canada-2 team of Victoria Altamore and Sophie Bukovec, 21-17, 21-16 in 34 minutes. Kropp and Pavlik will complete pool play on Saturday against Jamie Farley and Laurie Bachler of the Virgin Islands.

The women’s USA-2 team of Brittany Hochevar (Fowler, Colo.) and Emily Day (Torrance, Calif.) won their three-team pool with a 2-0 record on Friday. Hochevar and Day defeated the Trinidad & Tobago-1 team of Elki Phillip and Apphia Glasgow, 21-8, 21-4 in 23 minutes. Hochevar and Day beat the Honduras team of Gina Flores and Martha Euceda, 21-5, 21-4 in 22 minutes.

The women’s first round will also be played on Saturday.

On the men’s side, the USA-1 team of John Mayer (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) and Stafford Slick (Andover, Minn.) won two matches in its four-team pool on Friday. The U.S. pair beat the Puerto Rico-2 team of Hector Soto and Victor Rivera, 21-16, 21-16 in 35 minutes. It defeated the Nicaragua pairing of Rubén Mora and Miguel Lopez, 21-13, 21-15 in 25 minutes.

Mayer and Slick will complete pool play on Saturday against El Salvador-2 team of Carlos Guatemala and Armando Guatemala. The men’s first round will also begin on Saturday.

The USA-2 men’s team of Joey Dykstra (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) and Andy McGuire (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) struggled on Friday, losing to the Guatemala-1 team of Andy Leonardo and Eric Garrido, 21-18, 21-17 in 31 minutes. Dykstra and McGuire also fell to the Puerto Rico-1 team of Roberto Rodriguez and Erik Haddock, 18-21, 21-17, 15-6 in 45 minutes.

Dykstra and McGuire will close out pool play on Saturday against the Canada-2 team of Michael Plantinga and Cameron Wheelan.
