CHULA VISTA, Calif. (Sept. 28, 2012) – The U.S. women’s beach volleyball teams of Emily Day and Heather Hughes along with Summer Ross and Morgan Beck both went undefeated on the first day of pool play at the 2012 NORCECA Beach Volleyball Circuit event at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif.Kaitlin Sather (blue top) jousts with Heather Hughes during their match on Sept. 28.

There are 13 women’s teams split up into three pools of three and one pool of four competing at the tournament. Pool play will conclude on Saturday and the first rounds of single-elimination will begin.

The USA3 women’s team of Ross (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Beck (Coto de Caza, Calif.) secured the Pool C victory by upsetting Puerto Rico’s third-seeded Yarleen Santiago and Yamileska Yantin, 2-0 (21-18, 21-15) and then beating Costa Rica’s Ivette Alas and Marianela Alfaro, 2-0 (21-8, 21-13).

The USA1 team of Day (Torrance, Calif.) and Hughes (Fallbrook, Calif.) went undefeated against their U.S. compatriots in the four-team women’s Pool D, beating the USA 2 team of Michelle Moriarty (Houston, Texas) and Kaitlin Sather (Santa Rosa, Calif.) (21-8, 21-14) and the USA 5 team of Stevi Robinson (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) and Eve Ettinger (Santa Barbara, Calif.) (21-8, 21-11).

Day and Hughes will conclude pool play on Saturday against Diana Peguero and Nairobi Agramonte of Dominican Republic.

Moriarty and Sather bounced back after their morning loss to Day and Hughes and defeated Peguero and Agramonte (21-8, 21-8). The U.S. pair said they needed to regain their focus after the morning loss.

“We decided we needed to worry more about ourselves and coming out mentally prepared and physically ready,” Moriarty said. “We took some time off to rest and came back actually ready to play in the second match.”

“I think we just got off to a slow start,” Sather added. “Heather and Emily are our training buddies. We’ve played them I don’t know how many times this year in tournaments and in practice. So it’s a hard match to come out with.”

Moriarty and Sather will play Robinson and Ettinger in their final pool play match on Saturday. Robinson and Ettinger are 1-1 after losing to Day and Hughes and defeating Peguero and Agramonte.

The USA4 women’s team of Kirby Burnham (Newport Beach, Calif.) and Sara Hughes (Costa Mesa, Calif.) went 1-1 in Pool B on Friday, falling to Canada’s Jamie Broder and Kristina Valjas and defeating Guatemala’s Maria Jose Orellana and Maria Andrea Orellana.

Pool play will continue on Saturday (Sept. 29) with the matches starting at 9 a.m. Playoff matches will begin at 1 p.m. with the final matches scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.

Semifinals and finals are scheduled for Sunday (Sept. 30).
