U.S. Men's Update: Holt Heats Up in Italy

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Oct. 30, 2012) – All the news about U.S. men’s volleyball players in the U.S. and around the world.


U.S. middle blocker Max Holt (Cincinnati, Ohio) led his Italian Serie A league team with 19 points but Copra Elior Piacenza fell to Tonno Callipo Vibo Valentia 20-25, 25-22, 18-25, 25-19, 15-11 on Oct. 28. Holt started all three sets and finished with 19 points on 12 attacks, four blocks and three aces. U.S. outside hitter Futi Tavana (Saipipi, Samoa) is also on the roster for Piacenza, but did not play.

U.S. outside hitter Jeff Menzel (Santa Barbara, Calif.) scored 10 points as his team Castellana Grotti fell to Casa Modena, 25-27, 25-19, 25-13, 29-27 on Oct. 28. Menzel started the first three sets and scored on 10 attacks.

Andreoli Latina, which includes U.S. opposite Murphy Troy (St. Louis, Mo.), improved to 4-0 in the Italian league with a 25-19, 25-22, 25-20 victory over Bre Banca Lannutti Cuneo on Oct. 28. Troy did not play in the match.

In Italy’s Serie B league, U.S. outside hitter Garrett Muagututia (Oceanside, Calif.) led Sieco Service Ortona as it fell to Sidigas Atripalda, 23-25, 21-25, 25-17, 26-24, 15-7 on Oct. 27. Muagututia scored 28 points on 24 kills, three blocks and one ace. He was also credited with 18 receptions, 56 percent positive.


U.S. outside hitter Paul Lotman (Lakewood, Calif.), a 2012 Olympian, and his Polish Plus Liga team Asseco Resovia Rzeszów  defeated U.S. middle blocker Russell Holmes (Fountain Valley, Calif.), another 2012 Olympian, and Jastrzębski Węgiel, 25-22, 25-23, 25-23 on Oct. 28.

Lotman played as a substitute in the match and did not score. Holmes started all three sets and scored seven points on five kills, one block and one ace.

U.S. opposite Carson Clark (Santa Barbara, Calif.) scored 20 points as his French A league team Montpellier defeated AS Cannes, including U.S. outside hitter Robert Tarr (Cape Canaveral, Fla.) and middle blocker Matt Rawson (Los Angeles), 25-18, 21-25, 29-27, 25-21 on Oct. 27.

Clark scored all his points on attacks. Tarr led Cannes with 18 points on 16 attacks (.552 hitting efficiency) and two blocks. He was also credited with 22 receptions, 59 percent positive. Rawson added 10 points on five kills, four blocks and one ace.

U.S. middle blocker David Smith (Saugus, Calif.), a 2012 Olympian, and his team Tours, are now 3-0 I after defeating GVCO Ajaccio VB, 20-25, 18-25, 25-18, 25-19, 15-13 on Oct. 27. Smith started all five sets and scored two points on one kill and one ace.

In France’s B league, AS Orange Nassau, including U.S. libero Dustin Watten (Long Beach, Calif.) and outside hitters Damien Scott (Santa Ana, Calif.) and Eric Vance (Camarillo, Calif.) improved to 3-0 after defeating Saint-Brieuc Cotes D’Armor, 25-10, 25-21, 25-16 on Oct. 26. Vance started all three sets and scored 10 points on seven attacks, one block and two aces. He was also credited with 10 receptions, 70 percent positive. Scott finished with six points on three kills and three blocks. Watten was credited with 15 receptions, 67 percent positive.


U.S. outside hitter Matt Anderson (West Seneca, N.Y.), a 2012 Olympian, and his Russian Super League team Zenit Kazan improved to 5-0 after defeating Kuzbass Kemerovo, 25-19, 25-22, 25-21 on Oct. 27. U.S. opposite David McKienzie (Littleton, Colo.), a 2012 Olympian, is playing for Patriotas de Lares I the Puerto Rican league and led his team to a 25-20, 25-22, 22-25, 25-20 victory over Cariduros de Fajardo on Oct. 26. McKienzie led all scorers with 21 points on 18 kills, one block and two aces.

On Oct. 25, U.S. opposite Evan Patak (Pleasanton, Calif.) scored 23 points on 22 kills and one ace as Plataneros de Corozal defeated Capitanes de Arecibo, 25-22, 20-25, 29-27, 25-16.

In the Turkish league, U.S. setter Kevin Hansen (Newport Beach, Calif.), a 2008 Olympian, and Arkas Spor defeated U.S. outside hitter Reid Priddy (Richmond, Va.), a 2004, ’08 and ’12 Olympian, and Halkbank Ankara, 25-20, 25-21, 26-24. Hansen started all three sets and set his team to a 61.3 kill percent and a .563 hitting efficiency. He also scored two points on a kill and an ace. Priddy started all three sets and scored four points on four attacks.


U.S. setter Donald Suxho (Korce, Albania), a 2004 and ’12 Olympian, and his Argentina league team Drean Bolivar finished fourth at the ACLAV Cup. The team fell to Sarmiento Santana Textiles, 25-20, 19-25, 14-25, 25-19, 16-14 in the third-place match on Oct. 29. League play in Argentina will begin Nov. 8.

The Finnish team Raision Loimu, which includes three U.S. players, fell to Hurrikaani Loimaa, 25-22, 25-17, 23-25, 25-16 on Oct. 29. U.S. outside hitter Jordan Dufault (Lakewood, Calif.) started all four sets and scored 13 points on 10 kills and three blocks. He was also credited with 22 receptions, 55 percent positive. U.S. middle blocker Dan McDonnell (Glendale, Ariz.) added two points on two kills. U.S. opposite Dean Bittner (Lakewood, Calif.) started the first two sets and scored six points on four kills and two aces. To view a photo gallery, click here.


In Pool B, U.S. outside hitter Scott Touzinsky (St. Louis, Mo.), a 2008 Olympian, setter Kawika Shoji (Honolulu, Hawaii) and Germany’s Berlin Recycling Volleys defeated Czech Republic’s visiting Jihostroj Ceske Budejovice, 27-25, 25-22, 25-20, on Oct. 25. Touzinsky was named best receiver after being credited with 25 receptions, 84 percent positive and 28 percent perfect. He also scored eight points on seven attacks and one block. Shoji scored five points on four blocks and one kill. He set the team to a 44.6 kill percent and a .373 hitting efficiency. To view a photo gallery, click here. Murphy Troy and Italy’s Andreoli Latina defeated host Bulgaria’s CSKA Sofia, 25-17, 25-14, 25-21, on Oct. 24 in the first round of CEV Cup matches. The two teams will meet again in Italy on Nov. 1.

Russell Holmes and Jastrzębski Węgiel defeated visiting France’s Rennes Volley, 25-22, 25-23, 30-28 on Oct. 24. The two teams will meet again Oct. 31 in France.

Reid Priddy and Turkey’s Halkbank Ankara were defeated by host Delecta Bydgoszcz, 25-22, 25-22, 29-27 on Oct. 24. The two teams will play again on Nov. 1 in Turkey.


U.S. opposite Brook Billings, a 2004 Olympian, and Turkey’s Istanbul BBSK have qualified for the Challenge Cup after two victories over Metallurg Zhlobin of Belarus. On Oct. 20, visiting Istanbul defeated Zhlobin, 22-25, 23-25, 25-22, 25-22, 15-9 in Belarus. On Oct. 27, host Istanbul defeated Zhlobin, 25-23, 25-20, 25-17. In the next round, Istanbul will take on Max Holt and Copra Elior Piacenza of Italy.
