COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Aug. 21, 2012) – The 2012 U.S. Women’s Junior National Volleyball Team defeated Trinidad & Tobago 25-10, 25-10, 25-8 in its first match of pool play Tuesday at the NORCECA Women’s Junior (U-20) Continental Championship being held in Managua, Nicaragua.

Team USA plays Cuba on Thursday at 6 p.m. PT to conclude Pool C. The NORCECA Women’s Junior (U-20) Continental Championship is a qualification tournament into the 2013 FIVB Women’s Junior World Championship as the top three teams advance.

The U.S. got off to as quick start, taking early leads in all three sets. Strong serving and solid offense propelled Team USA to a decisive 25-10 victory in set one. The second set featured more of the same as the U.S. again tallied a 25-10 decision. Teams USA showed no sign of letting up in set three and held Trinidad & Tobago to single digits to claim the victory at 25-8.

Kadie Rolfzen (Papillion, Neb.) led Team USA with 15 points via 11 kills on 16 attempts, three aces and one block. Her twin sister, Amber Rolfzen (Papillion, Neb.), tallied nine points on five aces, three kills and one block. She also had three excellent receptions on three chances.  McKenzie Willey (Highland, Utah) chalked up six points on four kills and two aces while Merete Lutz (Houston, Texas) added four points on two kills, one block and one ace. Haleigh Washington (Idaho Springs, Colo.) also scored four points on four kills. Kayla Morin (Portage, Mich.) tallied four points on three blocks and one kill. Haley Fauntleroy (Winnetka, Ill.) chalked up two service aces and one kill to add three points and Azariah Stahl (Elkhart, Ind.) scored twice on a kill and an ace. Kelly Hunter (Papillion, Neb.) added one kill.

Kelsey Humphreys (Newport Beach, Calif.) tallied nine running sets on 30 attempts. Maya McClendon (Louisville, Ken.) tallied three digs on three attempts. Amanda Benson (Litchfield, Ariz.) led the team with three excellent receptions on seven attempts

The U.S. out-spiked Trinidad & Tobago 28-6 and out-blocked its opponent 6-1. The Americans tallied 14 unanswered aces. The U.S. scored 28 points on Trinidad & Tobago errors while limiting its own miscues to 21. Only three players scored for Trinidad & Tobago.

All 12 players saw the court in the opening match. In the first set, U.S. Women’s Junior National Team Head Coach Rod Wilde started Humphries at setter, Lutz and Washington at middle blocker, the Rolfzen sisters and McKenzie on the outside and Benson at libero. Hunter and Stahl subbed into the set.

In the second set, Wilde started Humphreys started at setter, Lutz and Washington at middle blocker, the Rolfzen sisters and McKenzie on the outside and Benson at libero. Hunter, McClendon and Fauntleroy subbed into the set.

In the final set, Wilde started Humphreys at setter, Fauntleroy and Washington at middle blocker, the Rolfzen sisters and Morin on the outside and Benson at libero. Hunter and Stahl subbed into the set.
