2018 George J. Fisher Leader in Volleyball Award

Steve Robb found out volleyball was not “some sissy girls’ game” in his first day as a fill-in player for the school team. Future Olympian Laurie Flachmeier Corbelli six-packed him, and he was hooked on the game.

Later, Robb’s play progressed and he would play in the Open Nationals. He thought the refs were bad, so they told him to get on the ref stand. That started a long officiating career with many responsibilities. Robb became a USAV national referee in 1978 and followed with his national beach referee patch in 1994. He would become the North Texas Regional Referee Chair from 1985 to 1988 and 2010 to 2015. He was on the National Rating Team from 1982 to 2009, and was the vice president of the officials’ division from 1996 to 1999. Robb was the rules interpreter for indoors from 1996 to 2004 and for beach from 2008 to 2012. He recently ended a five-year term as chair of the USAV indoor international referees commission in 2017.

Robb’s career highlights included officiating in both the Olympic Games and FIVB World Championship events. He was an international referee for both indoor and beach volleyball, one of only a few to officiate both disciplines at the international level.
