Nancy Funk
George J. Fisher Leader in Volleyball

Nancy Funk’s 47 years as a surgical registered nurse was her career, but volleyball became her passion outside of the hospital. What started as volunteering to coach a seventh and eighth grade team with little knowledge of the game back in 1986, a second career in volleyball was born.

Funk led those school teams to the league championship and runner-up in her second year, and she claims it was “beginners luck.” When her youngest daughter started playing junior club for KJVA, a new opportunity came in the form of refereeing matches as there was a shortage of officials. In 1988 she refereed her first high school match and then started to officiate USA Volleyball club tournaments in which her daughter played.

Funk brushed up on the USAV rulebook, went to an Ohio Valley Region referee clinic and became a USAV member. She received her provisional referee rating in 1990, earned her regional referee certification in 1992 and her junior national scorekeeper and junior national referee certifications in 1996. By 1997, Funk was honored with national scorer certification and the following year was a certified national referee. She also earned her PAVO national referee rating in 1999.

When the Pioneer Region formed out of the Ohio Valley Region, Funk became the new region’s scorer chair and member of its board of directors. She also became the Pioneer Region’s principal representative at USA Volleyball RVA meetings due to commissioner Ron Kordes’ commitments to his club and high school teams. Her roles within the region have included registrar and she was later voted assistant commissioner about 10 years ago. In 2011, Funk became the first and only full-time employee of the Pioneer Region – all while holding down her surgical nurse position until she retired from that profession in 2015.

Nationally, Funk was appointed as director of evaluation and certifications for scorekeepers for eight years before moving into the associate chair of national indoor scorers in 2012. Two years earlier, Funk was elected by the RVA to serve on USA Volleyball’s National Governance Committee and served as its chair in 2015 and 2016.
