2018 George J. Fisher Leader in Volleyball Award

Lynne Updegraff retired this year as commissioner of the Iowa Region after holding the position since 1995. She came a long way in sport, which only came from choosing between volleyball class and step aerobics as a post-pregnancy activity in 1980.

Updegraff was a member of Des Moines Coed Volleyball Club for 25 years and served on its board. During this time, she attended clinics where she learned from some of the best coaches in the world such as Lang Ping, John Kessel and Stew McDole. Updegraff would become an IMPACT instructor for 15 years, passing on her coaching knowledge to new coaches. She was also instrumental in starting the first junior regional championship with the then-Cornbelt Region.

Updegraff was also active in officiating the game. She earned her USAV National Scorers patch in in 1992 and later would be become internationally certified. Updegraff helped revise the scoring section of two Domestic Competition Regulations. She served on two national committees to revise the ROD manual. Lynne chaired the Structure and Function Committee for three years, as well as the RVAA Election Committee for four years. She was a member of the National SafeSport group that helped set up the organizational structure.
