Polly Lowery Simmons was a member of the U.S. Women’s National Team in the 1950s. She was captain of the U.S. Women’s team competing in the inaugural Pan American Games in 1955. A year later, Lowery Simmons played in the 1956 FIVB World Championship and served as the floor captain. She would later be an alternate on the 1964 U.S. Olympic Women’s Volleyball Team. Polly competed in four USA Volleyball National Championships finals, winning two gold medals. She is a four-time USA Volleyball Open National Championships Women’s Open Division All-American, twice garnering first-time honors. Lowery Simmons helped Red Shields-Houston to consecutive silver medals at the 1950 and 1951 Open Nationals, then won gold with LaRose Houstonnettes in 1954.
