What is Team USA?

Team USA was created in 1989 by USA Triathlon at the request of the International Triathlon Union (ITU), which was starting the first World Championship at the Olympic-distance in Avignon, France. Team USA is the group of age-group athletes that qualify for the right to represent the United States and compete in the ITU World Championships, which attracts the best athletes representing over 50 countries each year.

What it means to be a part of Team USA

This is your chance at the ultimate opportunity to race in one of triathlon’s biggest, most competitive events, to spend time with family and friends and travel all over the world.

The most fulfilling part of being on Team USA is the friends you make along the way, by eating meals, taking part in organized team rides, swims and runs and mingling with athletes from across the world.

Competing in the World Championship and representing the U.S. is just one of the unique functions that athletes attend. You’ll also partake in the following:

  • The ITU Parade of Nations: march with other athletes from all attending countries, culminating with an entertaining flair of the local custom (dancing, acrobats, and singing/music).
  • The ITU pasta party: Typically offering nutritious and inexpensive local cuisine, this is also a great way to mingle with fellow team members and athletes from other countries.
  • Team USA party: Celebrate everyone's achievements at this free party, open to U.S. athletes and their family and friends.
  • Team USA meeting: Held during the week of the World Championships, athletes are given valuable information about the race.
  • USA Triathlon support: Doctors provided at no cost; soft tissue support from chiropractors; bike mechanic support; and massage for only $10/an hour. Travel support is provided by an experienced and supportive company.

If you are a current member of Team USA, you automatically qualify for your respective National Championship event next year. And athletes on each of the world teams receive monthly emails from the national office with updates on various race related activities.

Only the best athletes in the sport of triathlon are able to represent the U.S. at the ITU World Championships, acting as role models and inspiration for millions of Americans! Seize this moment and experience a truly life-changing opportunity and come make history with us!
