Life Threatening Injuries

For life threatening injuries, please follow the steps below.

  1. Contact Certified Race Official (CRO), if one was requested for your event

If there is no CRO, call USAT directly:
    1. Brad Hildebrandt: 402-578-7039, Brad.Hildebrandt@usatriathlon.org
    2. Amber Cratsenberg: 206-250-3604, Amber.Cratsenberg@usatriathlon.org

  2. CRO contacts USAT Commission of Officials, Mark Turner.
While CRO is contacting Commissioner and USAT, inform the athlete’s emergency contact of the situation, if you haven’t already, and encourage them to head to the hospital.

Begin collecting witness statements from police, first responders, lifeguards, etc., anyone that was involved with the incident. These can be written or recorded in the interest of time.

Have an incident report filled out as soon as reasonably possible with as much information as you can gather.

  3. Mark Turner contacts USAT staff, Brad Hildebrandt or Amber Cratsenberg, and informs them of the situation.
  4. USAT will connect with the Race Director to gather more information and provide assistance with creating a statement for public release.

Wait to release a statement until you speak with USAT as we have a communications team that can help to craft a proper statement that speaks to the incident and maintains appropriate athlete privacy.

For Athletes

  1. Athletes must file with their primary healthcare provider (i.e. United Healthcare, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, traveler's insurance, etc.).
  2. Athlete completes a medical claim form. The medical claim form along with all explanation of benefit documents should be sent directly from the athlete to the insurance company as indicated on the claim form.
  3. Athletes will pay a deductible. All athletes using USA Triathlon insurance will pay anywhere from $250 (two-hundred and fifty U.S. dollars) to $1,000 (one thousand U.S. dollars) out of pocket and possibly more for uncovered expenses.
  4. Coverage limitations. Be advised that coverage may not apply to each and every claim. Additionally, coverage only extends to participants that have purchased a USA Triathlon annual or one-day membership and were injured through participation in a USA Triathlon Sanctioned Event.
