Recertification USA Triathlon Coach

Certified coaches must recertify every two years to remain informed on the latest information and expertise within triathlon. This process helps coaches continue to challenge themselves and further their knowledge to best serve their athletes. USA Triathlon’s recertification process consists of meeting specified criteria as well as submitting an online recertification application. All documents for recertification must be submitted within the online recertificaiton form completed through USAT University

USA Triathlon Certified Coaches must submit their completed recertification application by their certification expiration date which can be found on their coaching certificate. Recertification applications will be processed within 4-6 weeks after the date of submission and coaches will receive an updated coaching certificate 4-6 weeks after their recertification application has been approved.

Coaches who do not submit their recertification application by their expiration date are not eligible for recertification under the normal recertification policy and will be held to the late recertification policy.

If you have any questions regarding USA Triathlon's recertification process, please contact coaching@usatriathlon.org.

It is highly recommended that coaches begin working on the recertification requirements as soon as possible and submit up to three months in advance. Waiting until the last minute to complete the recertification requirements can lead to an overwhelming workload and financial obligation for the coach.

Recertification Requirements

Continuing Education Units (CEUs) - CEUs are courses designed to help a coach maintain his/her USA Triathlon Coaching Certification. CEUs are crucial for coaches to stay up-to-date with the most relevant triathlon coaching information as well as ensure each coach is well-rounded. There  are two types of CEUs that USA Triathlon recognizes, USAT Approved CEUs and NON-USAT CEUs. USA Triathlon is not responsible for tracking individual coaches CEUs

USAT Approved CEUs are courses that USA Triathlon runs or is affiliated with. NON-USAT CEUs are courses held by outside organizations. CEUs are not given for the daily activities of a coach such as attending   training, leading training rides, meeting with athletes, etc. Please note, any additional CEUs earned cannot be carried over to a future recertification. Coaches are responsible for tracking their CEUs, getting NON-USAT courses reviewed for NON-USAT CEUs, and recording their CEUs in their online recertification form

Level I Certified Coaches must earn 15 CEUs to meet the CEU requirement for recertification. Level II, Level II Endurance, and Level III Certified Coaches must earn 20 CEUs to meet the CEU requirement for recertification. Five (5) of these CEUs must be USAT Approved CEUs. The remaining CEUs can be NON-USAT CEUs, USAT CEUs, or a mixture of the two.

Non-USAT approved CEUs

All CEUs must be submitted within the online recertification form. Do not submit them anywhere else, as they will not be reviewed. Any CEUs completed through the University system (webinar/DVD/book/newsletter exams) do not need to be manually added as they automatically display.

SafeSport Program - To raise awareness of misconduct in sport, the USOC mandates that every National Governing Body require education and training concerning athlete safety for all certified coaches. In 2018, a new SafeSport program was launched which is required of all new and recertifying coaching. The SafeSport Program is worth 3 USAT CEUs (this counts toward the 5 USAT CEU minimum). Coaches must complete all three sessions: 1. Sexual Misconduct Awareness Education 2. Mandatory Reporting 3. Emotional and Physical Misconduct.

To prove completion, coaches must upload all three certificates of completion within the online recertification form. Instructions on how to complete the SafeSport program can be found here.

CPR – USA Triathlon Certified Coaches must always maintain current CPR to be considered certified and can be completed online or in-person. A current CPR card is required for recertification but does not earn CEUs. In order to be accepted for recertification, your CPR card must have an expiration date after your coaching expiration date. For example: if your coaching certification expires 12/31/18, your CPR must be current after 12/31/18.

Proof of current CPR must be submitted within the online recertification form.

Service to the Sport – Service to the Sport is defined as, the ways you have given back to the sport of triathlon, above and beyond your normal coaching duties. Contributions should only be counted if they have occurred in the last two years. Please note, service to the sport is not your normal coaching business. Examples of service to the sport include but are not limited to: coaching or presenting at a USA Triathlon recognized camp/clinic/coaching program, holding local/regional/national USA Triathlon coaching positions, contributing to the Performance Coaching Newsletter or triathlon related scholarly publications, volunteering at a triathlon race/camp/clinic, or speaking at triathlon related lectures/conferences.

You will be required to enter your Service to the Sport information within the online recertification form

Online Background Check – Certified Coaches must always maintain a current background check through the NCSI. If you have completed a background check with USA Cycling, you will need to grant USA Triathlon access.
