A USA Triathlon Coaching Certification is valid for two (2) years. In order to maintain your USA Triathlon Coaching Certification, you must recertify at the end of that two-year time frame (USAT has two recertification deadlines per year: June 30 and December 31). Please note, your Coach Certification expiration date is located on your coaching certificate. Recertification ensures that coaches continue to challenge themselves and further their knowledge and is critical to remain informed on the latest information and expertise within the triathlon industry.

Coaches who do not complete the recertification process by their expiration date will have their USA Triathlon Coach Certification revoked. Coaches can get their USA Triathlon Coach Certification reinstated by adhering to the Late Recertification Policy

For questions regarding coach recertification, please contact coaching@usatriathlon.org.

Recertification Overview

USA Triathlon’s recertification process consists of completing specified requirements as well as submitting a recertification application. Coaches can purchase their recertification application by logging into their LearnUpon account and purchasing the $95 recertification application in the USA Triathlon Store

It is highly recommended that coaches begin working on their recertification requirements as soon as possible and submit their recertification application up to three months in advance. Waiting until the last minute to complete the recertification requirements can lead to an overwhelming workload and financial obligation for the coach.

Recertification Requirements

Continuing Education Units (CEUs)
There are two types of CEUs that USA Triathlon recognizes, USAT Approved CEUs (courses that USAT runs or is affiliated with) and Non-USAT CEUs (courses held by outside organizations). Of the total CEUs required, a minimum of five (5) must be USAT CEUs while the remaining CEUs can be USAT CEUs, Non-USAT CEUs or a mixture of the two.

CEUs are not given for CPR Certification, SafeSport Training or the daily activities of a coach (such as attending training, leading training rides, meeting with athletes, teaching lectures, etc.). Please note, any additional CEUs earned above the required CEU amount cannot be carried over to a future recertification periods. Coaches are responsible for tracking their CEUs and getting Non-USAT courses reviewed for Non-USAT CEU value.

CEU Tracking:

  • It's the responsibility of each certified coach to keep track and maintain a record of all documentation for your earned CEUs
  • CEUs must be completed in your two-year recertification cycle
  • You will upload your CEU documentation in your recertification application

The United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee Coaching Code of Conduct
The USOPC’s Ethics Code for Coaches offers coaches a sound, values-based reference to guide their actions. This code is intended to provide both general principles and decision-making guidelines to cover most situations encountered by coaches. The code’s primary goal is the welfare and protection of individuals and groups with whom coaches work. This code also provides a common set of values upon which coaches should base any decisions in their professional work.
