Katie Antares

About Katie: I live in Temple, Texas, and work for the VA, where I run the home based primary care program. I am an army veteran, and I have always been very active in sports, until I got injured. USA Triathlon provided me the perfect physical rehabilitation program, which allowed me to get my life back. There are no words that can express the lows a person feels when they are told their body will never again do what it once could. USA Triathlon provided me with an exercise program that measured my progress from race to race, and allowed me to incrementally increase my abilities on my own. I started with races that included a run distance of 5k or less, because doctors told me I would not be able to run too far. As I became comfortable with running, I began to venture into races with longer run distances. In 2013, I ran my first half marathon in January and my first marathon in October. The following year, I completed an ultra marathon! As a physical therapist now myself, I can assure you that there is no physical therapy rehabilitation program in the nation that will do that!

Sport Discipline: Triathlon, Duathlon

Most memorable moment in your multisport career: I had the worst race of my life several years ago. It was freezing outside, and everything went wrong. I was just angry from the moment I got out of the water. My front brakes popped on the first descent, which made for a harrowing ride back to town, my hands were so cold that I couldn't unhook my helmet or tie my shoes, and my feet were numb the entire run. I hit the finish line and collected my things as fast as I could. All I wanted was to get out of there as soon as possible. As I loaded my bike, I heard my name. I had won my age group!
