Chris Wodke

About Chris: I am a paratriathlete with Charcot-Marie-Tooth. I started life as a long-distance runner, but my CMT which causes muscle weakness and constant injuries caused me to cross train to lessen the impact on my body. This led me to triathlon. I also founded Team CMT to raise awareness of CMT. Patients with CMT used to be told not to exercise. We now know that was bad advice. I want to show others with CMT you can be strong, healthy and lead a full life. CMT does not have to get in the way of your dreams.

Most memorable moment in your multisport career: My most memorable moment is the day I ran the perfect race. It happened in Milwaukee, my home course, at my first USA Triathlon Sprint Triathlon National Championship race. It wasn't because I was fast, because I'm not or because I made the podium, because I didn't.  My experience reminded me of my favorite quote "I run because I can, when I get tired I remember those who can't run. What they would give to have this simple gift I take for granted and I run harder for them, I know they would do the same for me."  I felt the utter joy of being an athlete and having a mistake proof race. I wear a Team CMT uniform when I race, because I run to raise awareness of Charcot-Marie-Tooth or CMT, a neurological condition much like MS that affects 160,000 Americans. Many with this condition have trouble walking and have lost the ability to run.  I felt utter joy as I crossed the finish line, fully appreciating the gift of movement and satisfaction of racing for those that can't.
