The application period for these events is now open:

  • Clydesdale and Athena (sprint and Olympic-distance triathlon)
  • Off Road Triathlon (Olympic-distance)
  • Ultra-Distance Triathlon
  • Winter Triathlon

USA Triathlon Multisport Festival

To follow the new championship festival format put forth by the ITU, USA Triathlon has created the Multisport National Championships Festival. This bundle will include the disciplines of Olympic-distance and Long Course Aquabike, Long Course Triathlon and Duathlon, and ITU-Distance Aquathlon. The bundle will be wholly owned by the race organizers and will receive significant support from USA Triathlon. For further event and application information, please review the Request for Proposal packet.

The application period for the Multisport Festival is now open. Please review the RFP packet and contact Brian D'Amico with questions and to submit your bid. Festival bids are due by Friday, May 25, 2018.

Please continue reading for information on the remaining national championships up for bid.

Non-Festival National Championship Event Information

Event Backgrounds

USA Triathlon will continue to support a series of national championships that do not fit within the festival format. With support from USA Triathlon, the race director will be fully responsible for producing their respective event. The race director will have a dedicated contact at USAT that will be their guide through the entire process: signing the Memorandum-of-Understanding to handing out medals at the awards ceremony.

The following events are available for race directors to bid on: Winter Triathlon, Clydesdale and Athena, Off-Road Triathlon, and Ultra-Distance.

Winter Triathlon and Off-Road Triathlon National Championships will qualify for their respective 2019 ITU World Championships.

Non-Festival Championship Event Host Considerations

To be considered to host a 2019 USA Triathlon Non-Owned National Championship, race directors and their existing events must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Must be a current USA Triathlon Certified Race Director in good standing.
  • The event must already have been sanctioned for a minimum of two years.
  • The selected event will be required to ensure that the event produces a "national championship-caliber atmosphere." That means that the participants must feel they are competing in the highest level of their respective field in the country at your event. USA Triathlon will provide ample marketing and equipment support to ensure this effort is successful. (More details below).
  • All events selected for a non-owned national championship will be required to use the ACTIVE registration platform, unless one of the following exceptions are met:
    • In cases when the race director/event production company owns the registration company it uses, they will not be required to use ACTIVE.
    • In cases when the race director/event production company is obligated to an already existing, executed contract with another online event registration platform, they will not be required to use ACTIVE.

Marketing Expectations

Events awarded a national championship designation must adhere to these minimum marketing requirements set by USA Triathlon. Selected events will receive a manual with much more detail on our expectations.

  • The USAT National Championship designation must be clearly identified, using the supplied National Championship logo on event applications, marketing materials, awards, clothing, in television specials/videos, etc.
  • At a minimum, the USAT National Championship logo and verbiage must appear on both the front page and registration page of the event website. Both the logo and verbiage must be removed from the event website at the end of the designation year.
  • All media used to advertise and market the event must state you are hosting a 2019 USA Triathlon National Championship and if the race qualifies athletes for Team USA, it needs to be advertised and marketed as a 2020 Team USA World Championship qualifier.
  • In addition to signage created by the event organizer, USAT will send National Championship branded signage that must be utilized around the finish line and other high-traffic areas.
  • Race directors must adhere to the USAT Logo Usage Guidelines for USAT National Championships.
  • Race directors must make every effort to ensure their event provides a "national championship caliber" atmosphere for the athletes.
