The USA Triathlon Women’s Committee is seeking nominations for the Spirit of Judy Flannery Award, which was established in 1997 in honor of Judy Flannery. Flannery, a Grand Masters multisport athlete, served as the first Women's Commission chair and was killed in a bike accident. In 2014 the Women’s Committee re-introduced this award in honor of her memory and to support talented female triathletes who have contributed meaningfully to our sport. Past winners include: Clarinda Brueck, Celeste Callahan, Dottie Dorian, Sue Falsey, Melissa Merson, Kate Knight-Perry and Cherie Gruenfeld.
The Spirit of Judy Flannery Award will be presented by the Women’s Committee at the USA Triathlon Athlete of the Year Dinner held on Thursday, August 11, 2016 at the USA Triathlon National Age Group Championships in Omaha, Nebraska.Nominees should best represent those special qualities of Judy Flannery, among them:
- Excellence in multisport
- High moral character
- Demonstration of "giving back" to the sport
- Current female member in good standing of USA Triathlon, a preference will be noted for nominees in the Masters or Grand Masters division.
To nominate a deserving female triathlete, submit a letter of recommendation that addresses each of the criteria listed above to Lana Fountain, USAT Women's Committee Chair at triunifyhouston@gmail.com. Deadline for nominations is June 30, 2016 and the winner will be notified by July 11, 2016.

The USA Triathlon Women’s Committee is focused on creating a resource for female athletes of all levels and socioeconomic backgrounds by mentoring professional growth for women in the sport of triathlon. The Women’s Committee is concentrating on the quality of training as well as opportunities available for women in positions of authority and decision-making within associations that govern the sport. The WC is a national committee of women from all over the U.S. with a variety of professions and diverse levels of participation in triathlon.
