The 2011 USA Triathlon Youth and Junior Skills Camp (Southwest Region) finished up on July 2nd.  In keeping with the current growth of youth members within USA Triathlon, the camp filled at 34 athletes. Held for the 5th year at CSU Monterey Bay, we enjoyed great training weather for our daily swim, bike and run workouts. National Camp Director and Southwest Region Athlete Development Coordinator, Sharon Osgood was assisted by an impressive list of Head Coaches. The coaches included: Phil Digirolomo, Alexis Waddel Smith, Alison Osgood, Ryan Riell, Kristi Johnson and Todd Larlee. Athletes were led through open water specific swim workouts in the pool, underwater filming and analysis, run skills for form and speed, daily core workouts, drafting techniques and peloton skills, fast transitions, bike maintenance, climbing, descending, time trialing and other bike related skills. Athletes attended sessions on nutrition, elite rules, goal setting, relaxation techniques and how to set up training plans. Campers also found time to make new friends and understand the need for rest and recovery. The Southwest Region has many opportunities for these youth and junior athletes to develop and perfect their new found skills by participating in our Talent ID Series (non drafting sprint triathlons) or trying the new F1(draft legal) races.
