Cycling Conduct: Illegal Equipment

By USA Triathlon | Jan. 23, 2014, 5:24 p.m. (ET)

This week’s rule is Article 5.8—Illegal Equipment.

The rule disallows the use or possession of any personal audio device while participating in the bike portion of the event. The use of a radio or headset while cycling is considered hazardous. Cyclists need to be focused on their personal safety and that of those around them.  A time penalty is assessed anyone seen in violation of the rule.

Here’s the rule:

5.8. Illegal Equipment.
Any participants who any time uses, wears or carries a headset, radio, headphones, personal audio device, or any other item described in Section 3.4(i) shall be assessed a variable time penalty.
