Exceptions and Additions

By USA Triathlon | Feb. 28, 2014, 4:36 p.m. (ET)

While the USA Triathlon Competitive Rules is a comprehensive document, sometimes event organizers would like to add or amend one of the rules to have a better fit for their event. In that case, the race director applies to USA Triathlon to have an amendment to the current rules. If that "new" or "local" rule is approved by USA Triathlon, the race director must publish it on the race website and make sure all participants are aware of the rule.

It's always a good idea to check the race literature on the website or a packet pick-up to make sure you are aware if any amended rules are in effect. An example of a rules amendment would be to have the penalty for using a headset or personal audio device to be disqualification on first offense.

1.4 Rules Exceptions and Additions.
For any particular event, a race director may request from USA Triathlon a specific exception or addition to these rules. Any such request should be made with the consideration of the participant’s safety as the highest priority. All requests for rule changes must be made in writing. All exceptions or additions to these rules must be expressly approved in writing by the Executive Director of USA Triathlon and must be announced to all participants prior to the event.
