Swim Conduct: Illegal Equipment

By USA Triathlon | Feb. 01, 2014, 5:15 p.m. (ET)

If you've ever wondered what swim equipment to leave at home, check out this week's rule, Article 4.9—Illegal Equipment.

The rule prevents the use of fins, paddles, gloves, and any other artificial propulsion device. It also prevents the use of any type of flotation devices. One might point out that wetsuits are flotation devices, but wetsuits allowed for thermal protection with an upper temperature limitation.  The penalty for violating 4.9 is disqualification.

Here's the rule:

4.9. Illegal Equipment.
Any swimmer wearing any artificial propulsion device, including but not limited to fins, gloves, paddles, or floating devices of any kind shall be disqualified.
