Use of Goals and Objectives

By Bill Floyd | March 05, 2009, 12 a.m. (ET)

Every coach will tell you about how to reach your goals. However, the word "goals" may not be giving you the full meaning of what and how much to reach for in your training and competition.

A goal is your overall need to accomplish. To finish an Olympic distance triathlon, do an Ironman, and other goals are just that for the person who may lose interest after a while. Putting a numeric value to your goal is critical in attaining and reaching that moment of your life that will give you stronger memories, and a possible yearning to reach higher.

When you set your goals, be sure to put a number beside them. For example, "I will do an Ironman this year, and my objective is to come under 12 hours, and to place in the top 15 in my age group." Now you have a primary and secondary goal and objective criteria and this way you know you can reach them with your specific training and the race. Good luck in reaching a little higher so you can race a little faster.
